Okay, while all you macho blokes have been in the “swell” thread and over at the SUP forum comparing penis sizes, I’ve been doing a bit of work.
I’ve got a lot of ground to cover to tie the 3 bits of the subject together so I hope you can stick it out (no, I don’t mean your penises so you can put them away now).
So for the last 4 arvos I’ve been surfing this break at DY on the 10’ Miske model surftech, I should have been on the 9’6” Tollhurst but the 10’ is just so much easier to paddle. Problem is, some were coming through at 6 to 8ft and I was needing to do a couple of very late takeoffs with some big drops each day.
I’m proud to say that I made every one of them for 4 days straight and only buggered up the last one this arvo, but it was only about 3ft.
This is big news for someone like me because they scare me sh!tless coz I’m so old, fat and slow.
I recon being able to make them may have something to do with the fact that all week I’ve been using a single fin because someone here told me they paddle better, It’s a 9.25” fluid foil.
This is a pic of it in the Miske alongside the tollhurst with its standard 3 fin set up.
I really would like to use the tollhurst more often so I’ve decided to give it a go as a single fin to see if I can paddle it a bit better.
Besides, I wanted to try a noserider fin on the Miske, so I popped into Bennett’s and forked out 55 clams for a 9.5” noserider fin.
Here’s the 3 fins together.
And this is what they look like now.
I know anyone who’s been on this model of tollhurst would be horrified at me removing the standard set up, but if it encourages me to use the board more frequently because it’s easier to catch waves, then I don’t really care.
So where does the UFO bit come into the story?
Well while I was in Bennett’s I noticed they had wall-to-wall McTavish boards, they must have outnumbered the other sleds 3 to 1. I said to the guy can I take a picture of them because I know this guy who’s just crazy about them and has just about every model in his quiver, we suspect he carries a picture of Bob in his wallet (gosh, I wonder who I’m talking about????).
The guy in the shop had a chuckle, as if to imply he knew a few tragics like that.
Then he said, “I bet I know one that he doesn’t have, it’s only been out for about 4 weeks and it’s called the UFO”.
I said I would not be surprised if he had one on order already but I took a picture of it just in case.
Think you might find that the fin on the tolhurst might need to go back 1/3'rd to half the current gap, but try it first.
One thing that I've gotten in to is running the smallest side bites I can find with my larger centre fins currently running a fluid foil 9" cut-away and the smallest FCS site bites I can find think there 40cm tall, and there CARBON (what I like carbon ) Seems to be going really well good drive and great turning response.
If your wanting to try different fins try a couple of the shops they should have some "demo fins".
If your looking for a nice single fin try to have a look at some of the stuff Wilde is doing (Mona Vale Shaper) looked at some of his boards during the snowy really like them (almost more than the Redline - sorry Mac)
Wow obct thanks for that, never heard of the UFO. Looks like a Razar but if it has a new name it will be new for sure.Any pictures of the tail/rocker.
I like the look of the Tollhurst boards and there fin looks the goods as well.
Good luck and keep us posted with the results.Cool looking real deal surf store obct.
That epoxy FB white with blue arrow,is a dog, took one to Bali and it surfed like a boat.flicked that one on return.
There is some swell here so the FB will be out tomorrow.
Razar nose
I think you're right cc, I'll try it out, I'm now getting to the stage where I can detect a difference with fin positions because I'm now moving around much more.
Well blow me down Mac, don't tell me Bob snuck a new board in under your radar
The only dimension it had on the sticker was 9.1" and it said "High Performance".
Judging from the look of it, saying it was "High Performance" was almost redundant terminology, it did look speedy.
BTW, another thing I wanted to do was to sand the trailing edge and tips on all my fins regardless of if they were on the board or off. Apart from a number of fin scrapes on my calves and ankles from the side fins on both boards, on Tuesday I put a dirty big chop right across the bottom of my right heal.
I let the board spin in the air after a dismount and I could see the wind had caught it and it was coming straight back at me read down. I dived under water but in a million to one shot, the tip of the fin got me dead center on the heal.
Rotten place to have a cut because it breaks open every day as soon as I walk on it.
i was surfing with a mate yesterday who bought the ufo only a couple of days ago and yes very similar to the razor,i believe it is taking over from the razor so mac another one for the quiver or is there a cheap razor for sale.
Where did he buy the UFO from asea? The factory or Dukes?
Might head to Dukes later to talk sh-t, I am pretty good at that.
So what's the difference anyone know
obct is that you in the photo
Thanks for the offer BB,the wife would have my you know what's if another piece
of fibreglass entered the garage.
Mike said they are very close to a Razar, please share any info on the UFO,I would be very interested and you know boards Bill
mac offload the the razor as if you haven't thought about it already and mrs mac wont't know the diff.By the way my mate said the ufo was a fast board as he had my razor previously and traded for the ufo.I'll have a ride of it in the right conditions and give you feedback unless you have test run one for yourself.
Your right I have a wife who supports my addiction got to love that Na she is cool and understands my problem
Yes come clean now asea,Mike told me you have a very similar addiction, **** he even said your a nice guy, FM
Made an offer on the whole package, out of here for the next couple of hours, heading to the steak house for a bite and home to watch the Union,We have two family friends playing for the green and gold tonight.
oh just kidding about the offer
If you look behind the guy holding the UFO, you can see a yellow board with black edging. It's a Barry Bennett and I think it's called a "noserider" model, they seem to do a lot of them down there lately. They usually have a bit of a retro look to them.
Trouble is, they don't much look like noseriders with that pointy front.
I've seen a couple in the water and the guys on them didn't seem to be doing much of anything let along noseriding them.
I go to curly most Saturday mornings but only to walk the dog.
I do surf there occasionally but whenever it's working, there's other places that are working better for a mal.
If I do go in it's only at the north end, down to about the centre. I've never been anywhere near the southern end, it seems to be permanently lumpy and it's really exposed.
Most times I'm looking for a wave down that way I drive straight past it and go in at Freshwater.
mac i'm at work trying to watch footy and this addictive site, his name is Dave English nice guy and i bet there is no room for the rum after your huge steak.
This one would be best for obct to answer as I have not used a Dion fin could be good for nose riding.
obct take a fin key out with you and play.
Now, move the fin 2 inches back from the
top then I want you to surf from the tail
and report back.
Dam I sound like a surf coach
Thanks to obct I am looking at the UFO, I've visited the factory and sent a few emails to a guy I know there.
The UFO has the same rocker are the Original with a very similar outline as the Razar/F4, my question is,on the rocker.more does what and less does what?
If I do order the UFO, I will keep the Razar and trade the Fireball in,yes it will be a sad day to part ways with the FB
