I've been to Bali a few times but never surfed Medewi or Balian. Thinking of going next year and staying out there to hopefully get some less crowded longboard type waves. Has anyone here been there and what are the crowds and accomodation like there?

Surfed both, very good but Medewi is miles away. Good on any tide. balian is good on a higher tide and is a swell magnet so only go if its small everywhere else.

Medewi is not bad for crowds as its miles away from Kuta ect, dunno about accom as I did a day trip but there were hotels there.

Same with Balian, did a day trip. Nice place to hang on the beach and it looked as if you could stay on the beach but I didnt look into it. It did get a bit crowded but nothing to worry about

Thanks again Doggie. I was thinking of going to New Guinea but heard it was a bit hit and miss swell wise so Bali looks the go because its cheap, the foods good and is pretty consistent for swell.

Balian, micks place, pondok pitau, at the bottom of the hill

medewi, gedwi ?? it sounds like ketut but starts with a g, at the end of the surf road its on the right next one down the shoreline from the fancy one, you get to it through the soccer field, family owned place been going there since the kids were little now they all grown up and have kids themselves. the nasi goreng is the best on the island, comes with a piece of awesome fried chicken, stay there a week and you'll notice the number of chickens thinning out.
don't let the deaf guy play on your sensitivities to get you to buy a shirt, he's seriously the richest guy in medewi.
or stay at mummas, blue house about two houses off the corner of mainstreet on surf road, cheap as, safe as, last year was still only like 25 thou a night, toothless mumma will make sure your gear is safe whilst you surf and pull the urchin spines out your feet with tweezers while you sit out front and have a post surf beer delivered to you ice cold straight from the shop for like 1 thou extra

Sounds good Mac. I'm looking at August next year because I get set periods of leave. I checked the waves out on you tube and they look very longboard friendly. Just looking for somewhere cruisy to have a surf holiday. I doubt that any airline will let me take a 10 footer though but I should be able to take a 7, 8 and a 9 foot boards.
Thanks for that info there too Doc.

or just save some coin and buy one when you get there, there are tonnes of places to buy all types of boards and they're cheap now, not like twenty years ago when they'd try and slug you 800-1200usd for a shortboard

I just hired one last time but we stayed at Legian on a family trip and that was ok. I'd still rather take mine over.
Not sure about heading over with Queenslanders though. They must be all time paddlers surfing those points up there.

Medewi is a great fun mellow wave spot. Waves are a bit fatter, don't expect barrelling bukit waves. It did get pretty crowded some days, 20-40 people out when I was there in may '10 - but a relaxed vibe mostly.

I stayed at an expensive hotel Puri Dajuma 5 min hotel shuttle (free) - really beautiful place I'd recommend if you want luxury.

There is another big hotel there almost as expensive as Puri but lacks the attention to detail called Medewi Beach hotel - its draw card is A/C and in front of the point.

Otherwise go to Gede 'hotel' on the point. Very basic, cheap, good food, great company. Eat and drink there if nothing else.

Balian is a great bigger wave, a bit of a swell magnet and can get pretty crowded with crew. You can stay at Pondok Pitaya.

Booties!

Thanks for the info Snorton it all sounds good. No lack of places to stay there from the sound of things. It would be good to stay somewhere with a pool though.

smh-Yes a bit of comfort doesn't go astray on hols. Puri dajuma and Medewi Hotel both have pools.
objct-a mal wave with fun take off, a fat shoulder, then a couple of racy sections
I took the fish over for convenience
