Hi all,
I've been riding a 9'4" McTavish for a few years now. I want to get a shorter board for bigger days, but I don't want to go to a shortboard. I was thinking something like a Takayama Scorpion. Does anyone have one? If not, what do you recommend?
Cheers,
B
From what I've read here, there are a few guys who rate them.
Depending how you want to approach your surfing have a look
at the McT uf8 just to ticket off your list may be
Oh and welcome to the garden
I did look into a Sumo as well. Although I like the tufflite aspect of the Scorpion. Do you think the Sumo would handle bigger swells?
Welcome to the long room Rooster - Friday is a great time to join the fun - its almost 4pm which means its time for.........
I have never surfed either of those boards but saw a nice looking 6'4" sumo last w/e in a shop - it looked like a nice fun board with tail that could handle the bigger stuff - no doubt a bigger model though. A few of the lads in the long room love the Scorpion so hopefully some feedback is not far away.
ok, i had a short session on a 7'2. i fell in love with it and most probably will be my new board. in saying that,i do think it would handle the bigger stuff, but i would go for a totally different board for that. i surfed the scorp in 2ft mess and it did what the blurb says. the wide nose didnt really play much in it the day i surfed it. would have liked to try it as a quad though. fast board easy to turn, much easier than my 8ball and i love that board. great paddler. i only have great things to say about it. would like to hear what other boards people recommend for the waves you are chasing
I've been riding what I call a longboard mini gun for the last couple of years. Great one board travelling quiver, enough of a mal if it's knee high but sweet when it's over head. This one is 7'2".
hey rooster i've recently downsized from a 7-6 mini mal and LB to a Takayama Scorpion 7-0. Great board, i ride it anywhere from waist to head high and ride my LB on smaller stuff. i've got it setup as a quad and is very responsive on the turns, i'm keen to give the single fin a crack in the near future and get some nice carving turns happening. Best thing about the board is the paddling power, with plenty of volume up front you can really catch a lot of waves. Only downside to the board is it doesn't take much to ding up as it's a tufflite!
oh and the only other challenge i can think of is duck-diving the beast! might have to revert to an eskimo roll?
Thanks Markass, I did think about the duckdiving situation. Although I eskimo all the time with the McTavish so no biggie. Do you think dropping down from at 9'4" to a 6'8" would be too big of a drop? Do you find the tufflite too light?
na no problem dropping down from that size, Takayama has plenty of volume. You're right it's pretty dam light it kinda skims across the water but no complaints there.

Yeah - but it was rubbish.
Drove the coast only to go out just off Trigg Point, but it was very shallow with a strong cross shore run to it. Then went to Mettams rights, but the rocks were poking up a bit too much for my liking... Took the Mal out at Metts lefts and got 3 or 4 before the swell dropped to nothing.
Should have travelled, but had a biggish night Sat and got up a little late & dusty.

Nowhere was!! This summer metro has been the worst I can recall (for the avg weekend warrior). My wife says I say that every year - but sh!t it has been woeful on average...
I have had three decent surfs since Xmas - and all of them I travelled.
