Has anyone ridden one of these ? What do you think of them? My blank arrives today and the shaping will begin as soon as I get some free time. I have got hold of a Model T that I can use as a basis for my first shape. I was thinking of putting a pin tail on it though. Any thought most appreciated. I am not trying to re-invent the world here as it is my first effort.

Its going to be 9'4" by 23 * 3 with 6 ounce on the bottom and 2 * on the top - any ideas re fins for this new beast? I have the art work sorted - am going to attempt a resin tint first time around - have watched hours of youtube and reckon I can pull it off -hopefully First time board shaper so I blame obct, Sharpie and LFish for inspiring me to build my own. Heaven knows what it will turn out like. Fingers crossed but starting to get pretty excited now. The GF will hate the mess in the garage I am thinking

Hey, don't balme me.

I reckon sharpie was a bigger influence than me.

It's not the mess that she'll hate, it's the resin smell that will kill her.

BTW, I think my person arrow has some good nose riding feature on the underside that you could look at.

But the tail is way too wide for turning and the 50/50 rails are too knify for someone like me.

Let me find a recent thread on the sways where someone had given some really nice dims for a noserider.

Found it

Yeah I have a 10ftr, I like it but plenty of people don't like the Model T. It's not the easiest board to surf, fairly flat rocker and the 60/40 rails take a while to get used to.
it is a proper nose rider, ie it is built for setting your line and getting up the front and stepping back to turn it etc. probably best in slower fat waves.

As for fins, a massive 10inch Keel fin is probably the best.

There is a round tail version on the Tak website, its called something like the noserider or something. I'll have a look later.

If it was me I'd go more of an all rounder type board, still have a big wide nose but I'd have rolled rails running into a bit of edge in the tail and pull the tail in a bit, Just to make it more user friendly when you jump on it after riding your SB.

This is the bit where you start to appreciate how skillful the people that make your boards are and why they are indeed way too cheap......

But, for what it's worth, my tips would be:

- Buy a pre-shaped machine cut blank and get some practice finishing the fine tuning parts of the board from a mostly there perspective.

- Get some decent lights set up before you start. Using the lights is most of the way the secrets to making the board work. You can see the lines on the edges, dips etc.

- Use Solarez or Solcat to glass the board. You will need as much time as you can get to make it neat, especially on a big board like that. Will also have less fumes for your missus. A beautiful invention, get your laps down, nice and flat all wet out etc and then put in the sun. Whammo....

Have fun mate!

Good to see you gona have a go.......my advise....take your time, do some shaping....have a break, even 'till the next day & have a good look....you'll surely see some things that weren't there the day before!!!
You'll have to decide the type of board you want....what a pity you didn't have a ride on either one of the board I had at Plomer.
You'll be right mate, as I've said...take your time...don't be in too much of a hurry.
GOOD LUCK!!!!......
I'm sure you will post pics as you go along

Thanks for that....CMC - it will be coming out of a machine - trying not to re-invent the wheel first time around. I love the look of the UV stuff - defintiely keen to use it. I am hoping to do a few things similar to what SP was saying and reduce the tail area and put some edge in at the back. I would like to make more of an all rounder SP but I am trying to keep the costs down on this first one and using what is freely available for me. The shape it will be based off is similar to a model T. I could use something else but that would involve more cost as the fella wit the machine would need to build the file. I am trying too keep the first one as simple as possible to reduce the error count and keep the costs down in case I blow it................

Mate I dont think you'll go wrong with the model T, even as it is its still a great board to surf. And mine is 10ft and you're a bit heavier than me so you'll turn it easier than I can.

IMO it is a great shape even for an all rounder, and i wouldn't get rid of mine, just the old school rails are a bit odd when coming from anything with some edge in it, i reckon you're on the right track with what you said about reducing the tail area and sharpen up the rails.

10 inch Dolphin seems like a goer. Would you consider putting sides on it - or just leave it as a big old single fin?

Well its been a tough 4 weeks with far too much work on for my liking. Today I finally managed to find a few spare hours......

As you can see from the above photos the tail and nose are not yet complete. I am aiming to pull the tail in like this one and go for a similar nose. The rails have come out much better than I expected. There is a nice hard edge through the last half of the board now....lets hope it works

I am starting to get very nervous as I am yet to put in the concave under the nose....I got some good advice today on how to achieve this so will be hitting up the old boys in the morning as I am going to need a template.

My new fin has arrived and its so beautiful in the flesh it freaks me out. Its a work of art. Here is a photo of it.....I absolutely love it and can not wait to get this board finished and stick it in. I am hoping to finish off the shaping of the nose, tail, nose concave and rails on Tuesday and lay the first glass later next week. The resin tint design is sorted - but it will come down to a bit of luck I reckon to make it look ok. Time will be my enemy on the next part of this build. I need to learn to be more patient and take things slower. Anyway having a blast!

Thanks fellas.....I am hoping to finsh the shaping off tom if I get enough work done today / tonight. Although the surf looks like it will be cooking tom which may put the project on the backburner. I spent some time yest arvo grabbing a few templates for the nose, tail and under-nose concave from one of the local legions up this way - he has a garage full of beautiful boards - one day I will try and take a pic of his quiver if he will let me Looks like the concave will be a tear dropped shape that is very shallow and tappers out almost half way down the board. I don't really like the big deep disc panned shapped ones. I grabbed the tail template of a McT rounded pin to keep Mac happy.

It's starting to sound like the finished board will be more similar to a pintail redline than a model T.

Not a bad choice really, after seeing the way you love to throw that little FireWire around, I really don't think you're a? Shall we say, "conservative enough gent" to Be satisfied with a big arsed square tail.

Managed to find a few spare hours today to finish off the shaping of the new toy. Pretty happy so far with how things are going. It looks like I have left a lot of foam in it but I was erring on the safe side. Rather have too much than not enough first time around Had some good supervision to help me through a few tricky bits. I re-shaped the tail off a Mct template I grabbed off one of the fellas at the beach. Its now a lovely rounded pin and I have retained a lot of edge in the rails through the back 1/3 of the board. The nose has been re-shaped as well. The big issue I had was tying to put a tear-dropped concave under the nose. It was not too bad in the end - just took it nice and slow. Lots of elbow grease. Certainly not the process you would follow if you were doing it commercially!!!! Its not overly deep but that was not my intention. It runs out about a metre down the board.

Anyway all set to glass her next week at long last. Its taken me a lot longer than I hoped to get it this far but sometimes you have to work. I hope to lay the first bit of glass on Tuesday. It will be a 6*6 on the top and 6 on the bottom.

Any comments more than welcome - I can still sand some more away

My comment, you better be taking it to PP... Might have to borrow it to steal a few waves off OB with that 12 ftr..

Looks great Ted. Are you tinting it?
