Great 80's photo !!
Are they glasses of beer !!?? Cool glasses.
Mac, I can't remember the name of the place we stayed in in Kauai, but it was one of the Hotels in that little bunch amongst the old Coconut Plantation, only about 10-15mins north of the airport. But we got a Jeep, and hit the road for a few hours each day. It's a spectacular island !
I'm the one on the left with the 80s porn mustache and the harry high pants shorts.
Drinking small glassed of beer was always the norm up there, even to this day we try to drink middies rather than schooners so they stay at the right temp.
I probably shouldn't say too much but at that stage the dude on the right was married to a girl from Grafton and her sister was married to a sepo who was not a bad surfer on the international stage.
Unfortunately his brother in law he had fallen victim to his own excesses and it was at about that stage that he was running a surf school in Australia and trying to put the pieces back together again.
He then got the opportunity to start all over again in Europe and went to his brother in law, (the guy on the right in the picture) for a bit of help.
The sepo came good again in a real big way and has never looked back since, and even though they both remarried, he never forgot the favour his ex brother in law did him, so in May of 2003 when my mate turned 50, he shouted him to a 13 day indo cruise, a new empty reef break every morning for 13 mornings.
I turned 50 at about the same time and all I got was a stupid watch, I was well pissed.
obct,I recall you telling that story a while back and sounds like a good one.
Gee what Id give for names but I guess this is a public forum
I love those classic shots, maybe we should start a old photo thread
I wouldn't worry about the high shorts and the mustache,I know a guy in the forum who looks same same
I reckon you and your mate were the cool dudes in the dayand if you look closely obct has a beer in one hand and another on the ready to his leftand the vee neck tee's are the rage once morepink is the new black and the 80's short boardies are in vogue again
Longboarding is more popular today than it was in the 80's as well.full circle the combie has been replaced by X5's and the new pet hate has changed, once the Mal rider to goat boater now the sup's
Not naming names is more to do with my mates privacy rather than the privacy of the well known surfer.
He wrote a book and was very open about his past and the things that lead to his rise and fall and rise again.
The 80s may have been bad for fashions but I reckon the 70s were worse, those platform shoes and bell bottoms were just horrendous and to this day my wife still ribs me about the fact that I once owned a pair of clogs.
Seriously, on the actual subject of where you would live if you could, I would probably stick with living in Sydney all my life. All those years of visiting that little town has taught me that country towns are really nice places to visit but I could never live there.
In small towns everyone knows everyone and for many, that's an attraction but along with that, everyone seems to know everyones business and for me, that's not an attraction.
I like the way a big city gives me a measure of privacy and anonymity.
I can walk around a corner and not be known, I guess it's something that I grew up with and feel comfortable with. Up until the age of about 35 or 40 I probably could have moved to a little town and made a success of it, but not anymore.
I wouldn't mind living out front of that bank Dogman surfs. I grew up around that area. mmmm yes, having Dogman for a neighbour would be interesting !!
I met dogman at a comp earlier this year,he is a great guy with a smile from ear to ear (all the time) he would be a great neighbour I reckon, loves his surfing, music and meat pies Not sure how the pies would go cooking on the BBQ
I would rather be waking up in my swag in the dunes in front of an uncrowded head high beach break with light off shore winds and sunny skies.
Would surf til I could barely walk then have bacon and eggs for brekkie and fish for an hour or two, eat the catch for lunch (big fat yellowfin whiting preferably) get the radio cranking with the ashes on and have a few cans with the boys under the shade of the tarp.....
Damn it now Friday is gonna go real slow..nice one Mac [}:)]
SW, that sounds exactly like the lifestyle George Greanough leads up there near Byron.
I was reading a funny story on real surf about a guy who was helping him re-edit "the inner most limits....." after often being frustrated that George would not be there when he turned up for work, he finally worked out when George would make himself available for what George referred to a "the button pushing".
It all depended on the wind and the swell direction, if neither suited fishing or a wave, then there's a good change George was happy to do some work.
What a life eh?
I used to go on frequent camping trips around Broken Head, Lennox areas, and you would bump into George quite a bit. I was really nervous to talk to him first time round, but when I plucked up the courage to talk to him, yeah, he was always very chatty! Nice bloke.
He loves his surf mat ! As a confession, I also used to bodyboard in the 90's (). I also loved his work on Crystal Voyager. So to have a few surfs with him over the years was a little bit of a treat !!
I've been meaning to buy and old Spoon too, but they are always too expensive.... Would love to ride one at Winki down here....
Back on topic, I would still live on the Goldy but just wish I didn't have to work for money. Then I could surf uncrowded (relatively) weekdays.
Hi all. Things are pretty good over here, the weather is generally pretty nice, mid 20s a bit of ocassional swell although yesterday and today the wind has been howling offshore, killing it. Might go up to Wedge on Sunday (a couple of hours North of Perth).
Back on topic, I'd live 6 months in Perth and 6 months anywhere between the Goldie and Ballina, the land of the right handed point break.
Bring on Lotto.
