I have had a gutful of legropes that fail when new or only a few surfs old. I have had the following happen:- the velcro doesnt grip and lets go, rope snaps at the base or even the metal rivets holding it together somehow let go. In none of the instances were the waves that big or threatening and in 2 of the 4 failures, I would estimate 100 to 150 dollars worth of damage each time (not including the legrope) when the board gets axed on the rocks or reef.
can someone please tell me a legrope brand that simply does what it says on the packaging and doesnt fail, I dont care how much it costs because its got to be cheaper than smashing boards or travelling hundreds of kilometers for waves and not being able to surf

Curious which ones you've had issues with?

top of the range ocean and earth for the velcro x1 and snapping at the base x2, and a 9ft squid let go at the rivet where it connects to the ankle. Best legrope I ever had was an bottom of the range el cheapo single swivel that never snapped and only retired when the velcro started to lose grip

I use creatures comp leggies for everyday use and an ocean and earth single swivel el-cheapo when its on and I have never ever broken a leggie. I do wash them after every surf and replace them usually every year though so that may have something to do with it.

Surprised to hear you had a issue with O&E.

Billboard,I think the reason you've never had a problem is you NEVER fall off

in that case why wear one ?surfing can only improve by not wearing one,you know what i mean,no rodeo dismounts, going left into rocks etc

Truth be known I rarely surf the kind of waves anymore that snaps leggies - I am only one decent wipeout from having to be pushed around for a couple of years so I don't push my luck (too often) Thats probably why I also don't fall off that often as well

maybe try a longer rope....more give...less pressure on the rope. with the velcro giving way...your probably taking the strap off after your surf and leaving it open...I allways give mine a hit on a post or something to get any sand out of it and then do it up...if you don't, it just gathers lint and crap and chokes the little gripper thingies...havn't had a strap fail or a rope break for years....I don't know if it's the brands you are using or just a bit of preventive maintanance... they all look pretty much the same nowdays....just this morning I clipped my young bloke on the back of the head for leaving his rope undone after a surf....he just said I was incredibly anal

Hi arkgee,how are you mate?

I for one think, new board 1000 bucks so spend 50 on a good quality leggie which imo should be a freebie with every new board sold.

I always strap the strap together before leaving the water.

My Squid has lasted about 3 years of pretty regular use.
I Always rinse with fresh water after surf.
have snapped 3 Creatures over the past few years but i suppose i wasnt really looking after them as well as the Squid.
The Squid seems to be a thicker leggie too i guess

"hand tied" leashes are actually very good, and are less prone to snapping, as there is no "weld point".

Make sure it is at least 7.0mm chord. 7.4mm is better, for general Mal use. And 8.0mm chord is only done by a few, and it's pretty chunky, but a requirement for the bigger days in Victoria.

If you are surfing a rocky reef, and if the waves are kind of solid, it is preferable to use a leash which is less than 1 year old. Any leash will eventually fail.

It's probably about time to retire this leash, or just use it a beach breaks, where your beach will wash-up onto the sand....

Having said that, I have an FCS leash that has lasted for about 8 years, but it's attached to an old Tufflite which only gets used at beachies.

Hey Tomayama,
Hand-tied is actually a "reef knot" or a "sheep shank". Technically a "sheep shank" Chord on one half, lease on the other..... fark it, I'll get a photo.

O&E and Balin still do hand tied.

Hand tied does not look as pretty, but I freakin' guarantee you, they are a whole heap stronger.... this blue leash has had a real solid work over.... nice amount of stretch, and it is hand tied.... leash sling back..... fark that!! Down here, your biggest problem is the old "tomb stone" !!! )

First pic - ankle leash end, the hand tied part is hidden in a "material pocket" with no swivel.
Second pic - board end, hand tied part is covered in a shrink wrap rubber, with 1 brass swivel.

This style is the original style, before the Bonded / Butt Join.... Newest O&E technology seems to eliminate that bond.....

The Hand Tied Leashes are actually CHEAPER too !! As I said, not as pretty, and not as marketable. 1 swivel is all you need.... Leashes had 1 swivel for ages. I'm guessing no swivels at the start. 2 swivels in the past 10 years or so..... (guessing)....

I meant to say Sheet Bend, not Sheep Shank.... (above).

That came to me today, while waiting for nice waves at Bells !
