Surfskier just got belted 1.5k's off Mullaz, escaped unscathed, helped ashore by mates. Ski trashed. Only a little one about 3m too.
Has been the week for it, was two instances of an 8-10ft Bronzie showing interest in crew where I was surfing on the weekend too.
Legs up boys
Sadly its my personal opinion its only going to get worse.
ITS MY OPINION that the food chain has been interrupted too much and a lack of food for these sharks has seen them moving in closer looking for food.
If you talk to fisherman who fish regularly they will tell you the sharks are more frequent and more aggressive then ever. Shark numbers have been decimated world wide by shark fining so you would expect to see less sharks but many experts (people with marine biology experience and degrees) will tell you numbers are reduced. Some by as much as 45% already world wide.
So why are more sharks being sited. Well smaller sharks have become more a issue as there seem to be fighting for food supplies. This is just my opinion but it makes sense. Fisherman tell that there are no fish left in our waters are they are now traveling further afield to catch fish. So why is it expected that sharks would Be any different. They are looking for food and sadly i think testing more than ever. Hence why it bit his ski and didn't than eat him when he was in the drink.
So in a nut shell what my opinion is that less sharks means more chance of getting hit by one..Its just my opinion though and as Smicko has pointed out I'm not a marine biologist by my theory has been disgusted with many and they all tendered to agree that it could be a plausible theory.
Which ever side of the fence you sit on about what to do about them and what is actually going on etc.. the fact is that is sucks worrying about it when you are paddling out for a wave!
Thats all I'll say about it, over to you boys..
I'm more concerned driving on public roads than sharks, at least that is how I deal with any concerns about being attacked. After seeing what happened to the mannequin during a man overboard drill, I try not to think about it too much
My kids love surfin and it worries the hell out of me sometimes. I think I might spend the bucks on some surf shields. i love sharks I think they are increible but I hope they keep thier distance.
Looks like the footage off dunsborough from about 6 weeks ago. 2 different sharks apparently. 3.5m and 4.5 m. not good having 2 in the same area at the same time......
I dunno the exact details, don't like how the shark breaches and eyeballs the camera.. What's going thru its mind
No fear whatsoever. That even gave me a few shivers.
I have swum with big tiger sharks, bull sharks etc in a shark pond with a stick to poke them off with, they had a degree of fear or intrigue and took a long time for them to come close enough for me to see them. That footage had no sign of that. They rule the water and they know it.. imagine sitting on your board and seeing that cruise at you. Dont know what I would do..
That was one of the scariest things I've ever seen! I know I'll get in trouble for saying it, but I was just thinging why can't we kill the damn thing! That's what I thought. Bloody scary looking beast. those idiots should not be teaching it that boats/people are a source of food!!
I was once a firm believer that killing was not the answer, but after being genuinely scared by that vid I am starting to sway..
Until effective/proven shark protection system is developed anyway
Theres clearly too many off em in WA at the moment,... and don't give me any BS that theres more people in the water, more cameras etc,....I have lived in the safety bay / secret harbour area all my life, and when I was a kid a white sighting in the bay was unheard of. Now its almost every second day. My bro's next door neighbour and friend was taken by one. The number of people in the bay hasnt changed that much over the last 25 years.
Something needs to be done!
They are definately teaching the animals that boats/people = food. They should not bait the water up. But then again, even fishermen who use burley and chase big deep sea fish, and then those fish come in half eaten because a shark got them, even they are kind of re-enforcing that the boat = food. It's a tough one.
So humans f*** up the ocean and sharks come in land and the best thing we can think of is cull them!? Where have I heard this before? Killing innocent creatures when we are to blame? World War 2 anyone? This topic really annoys me because everywhere I go it's 'kill this' 'kill that'.
Suba may have given up on biting and trolling this topic but people need to get over themselves. We are part of nature. Not above it. We are land mammals not water creatures - the water is THERE home. Sure life lost is tragic and very painful but it is OUR choice to be in the water.
Want to fix the problem? Stop the over fishing, have stricter guidelines on idiots in those videos and put preservation of the environment our no1. agenda (not fat mining ladies whom think they own the joint).
Because all we are doing is basically sweeping the problem under a rug. We'll keep killing them and the population will keep growing. The government needs to address the bigger picture and that is environmental conservation.
It was only a couple thousand years ago humans got by with warm clothes and shelter. Nowadays it's we need everything/ do everything and guess what gets destroyed when mining companies dig coal to fuel our winter heaters? The planets ecosystem.
Cull as you want mate but guess whats going to keep reproducing and when one day finally there are no fishes in the water, guess whats gonna be circling our shores more...
Rant over
