Given the confirmed sighting off the coast yesterday and the call to the authorities should they have closed the beaches? Also, was anyone out yesterday? Any attempt by clubbies to let people know? I know the footage was taken 3km out to sea and perhaps more information was given to the WP than has been released to the media but it seems a little bit weird doesn't it?

PerthNow.
Bit wierd with the info I'm picking up. Honestly did not even hear about it. Only heard from another breezer who posted sightings down at Cottesloe but even then it was crowded as and a board riders club added to the foray with competition held all along that area. No thought of sharks.
Thanks guys.
I don't think they should have closed the beaches with the sighting 3km's offshore. There's a reasonable chance there was another GW even closer to shore somewhere else, it's just luck someone happened to see that one off Trigg.
Oh, and I was out there somewhere yesterday too.
So if I was on that boat and dangled my leg in the water for a few minutes would I still be more likely to die of a bee sting and/or struck by lightning ? Fark off dickhead stats.
you east coasters make me laugh no doubt that they are magnificent critters just wished they would be magnificent 100 k's out to sea. As for the stats Scotty, we seem to be an exception to the rule RIP bro's.
That was my brothers mate Brett that got the footage. Top bloke. Been out fishing with him on that boat before. Will try find out who he alerted. He definitly would have been straight on the CB to sea rescue and other authorities without a doubt.
And 3k's is not far. Would be very interesting to know if the clubbies at least got the rubber Ducky out to go along and let surfers/swimmers know that there has been a white sighting, then let the public make up their own mind if they wanted to stay in the water or not.
If they did nothing in my opinion that is piss poor...
I heard about it on radio news on my way to the beach (scabs) at around 11am
report said GWS spotted about 300m off Trigg Beach [}:)][}:)]at 830am!!!!
(media sensationalism)
I figured that was 2 hours ago, heaps of people in the water..... Im on it was good for an hour and a half too.
the Ch7 chopper was about (prob hoping waiting for some action!!) between scabs n trigg for at least 30min
If shark was 3ks off shore well iI bet there was several more out there too.......no wait there couldnt have been coz they are very scarce and endangered
I was out just north of scarabs and the channel 7 chopper was running up and down the beach very low and slow. Was between 10 and 11.30ish, didn't see anyone trying to get people out of the water. Waves were too good to close the beach
I've got a mate in Trigg SC so will ask him tomorrow if they new about it. If fisheries were notified then nothing at all would of happened. Water police are the contact for sharks and they are completely understaffed IMHO. Either that or totally useless from my dealings with them
My bro spoke to him today but didn't talk to him about the alerting of authorities side of things. He did say that the bite went very quiet while fishing then up popped that thing out of nowhere. He estimated it to be around 4.5m so definitly not a pup and not something that you'd want to f#ck around with.
I was in at Dingo's and the clubbies were buzzing about in the rubber duckies.
Makes sense now to why the activity.
i was out there and saw the chopper and the 2 jet skis they were talking about on the news still didnt here about it till tonight ,that sux
Ok, so based on the info at hand I would say that the duty of care was breached in a big way. If an attack had occurred after that info was received I would say we would have our first case of litigation against the authorities that were given that info. The recent investigation into bush fire response (I know it's not a perfect analogy) seems to have been forgotten
playing devils advocate[}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)][}:)]
does that mean every time a boat, offshore, spots a shark someone should shut down a beach
3km is a lot of ocean How far off is too far?
If Ch 7 had a chopper up someone has been informed
Im as **** scared as the nxt bloke about being chomped or worse still one of my or a mates kids but.......
what is fair???
I knew a sighting had been made and I made a decision - shark was seen 2-3hrs ago 3km away Im thinking it s reasonably safe
how many of us would have got out of the water if we were told by clubbies that a shark was spotted 3ks out???
Ahhhh now you're talkin the talk Damo. "Litigation" Just wait til the authorities see that word, we'll be having flake on the menu at the school tuckshop in next to no time.
agree with you Mocha, shut downs given the circumstances can be "nanny state" stuff, I was more interested in signage or a siren even the lads in the ducks giving people the "heads up", lots of crew don't listen to radio or check websites (I do now!) I think as much info as possible represents duty of care. It worries me that some responses to this thread had those charged with our safety all around them but were unaware a large GWS was not really that far away, given recent events I find it very surprising. Lets face it a shark that size and species could well be responsible for at least one attack in the last 12 months. hey mick that whitey was twice the size of the SS Distress Beacon, probably wider too
3ks in newspaper Monday
300m radio on Sunday
1km Ch9 News
game of Chinese whispers anyone
maybe Woodo could confirm with his Bro??
You at work early Dave?
FROM WEBSITE SHARK ALARM - some good photos too
I usually have a little peek at this on way to beach just to be sure
(any means is good means - if looking for excuses)
4m Great White Shark has circled Brett Dunns boat, the shark was 300m north of the south Trigg cardinal marker and 200m offshore, which makes it 3km off the beach, the shark was heading inshore. Extreme caution is advised in the area.
I was in the water at the time. I was thinking about whitey, as you do, but was more scared my car would get torched. I was wondering why the water was empty, but that was more to do with lazy people sleeping in than a sighting.
you know the situation is getting bad when you are shi#tting yourself going for a surf at trigg point.
