Hey everyone,

Just joined after being a longtime browser of seabreeze and was wondering if anyone knows places where I can browse and find good deals on surfboards online. I still want to be able to go into a shop that is near me to pick a board up but would like to use the web to do a bit of research first and hopefully get a good deal if I can.

Thanks

I used a website called BuyitRideit before I moved to WA to get a good deal on a Channel Islands DFR. Just used the form on the board I was looking for and got back deals from shops in my area and then went and picked it up. Worked out good for me.

You can also try the manufacturers sites or surfstitch if you just wanted to use online only.

I have purchased surfboards online through www.boardcave.com/ before and it was very easy, they offer free shipping Australia wide. In addition, all the surfboards listed are manufactured in Australia! I like to go into the shop and feel the board, but I always get custom made boards, its the same price as on the rack, if you can wait 4 weeks, its worth every penny!

I think boardcave is a scam and is run just on what's hip and cool, not on what you really need. I would would prefer to send an email to a shaper,or call a shaper and have it sorted for me. Just my opinion and it is working for me

we get these every now and then don't we? Last one was about an app. I will say that I bought a board for the grom from a local shop, the "rack" price was 890 but I asked if he could do a bit better, he checked an online supplier and came back with 590, deal done! I've heard that it is pretty common for customers to check these sites and go in and demand that price from the retailer.

to right chrispy , after last months epic trip to bali i came to the conclusion that more than 50 -60% of crew are on the wrong boards either cant paddle in ,cant make the drop or cant make easy sections !! maybe to many crew are blinded by online marketing bullsh!1 if you want to surf better go and talk to the shapers that will cater for your needs ,tell them how you surf or want to surf

I am calling BS on this whole conversation.

Seabreeze is not the place for promoting your online business posing as a forum poster. You are not adding any value to our community.

Pay for a ad like the site sponsors or contribute something worth while here or f-off back to your online marketing sweat shop.

Your probably right, I have never used boardcave but it seemed to fit the description of what the op was asking about. I notice your pal SDR is at the top of the list of shapers on there

Yep he does. I met the guys from board cave when they we're about to start it. I just think it's a sham and told them that. I punched in some.requirements on there awhile back and the board it suggested gave me a good laugh. look there are some nice boards on their, but how will I know if they are any good for me? Oh a computer will match up the perfect stick......pfffft

I visit heaps of board builders on the coast and love it. Just find some of the bigger guys will not let you do it anymore.....somethinng to hide? Guys like SDR and Harvey, Munro and even mctavish love having punters dropping by the factory

Cant beat advice on guys who surf the same waves IMO, even if they surf them way better than you do they can take what you tell them and apply that to what will suit you.

I know how I want to surf ... reality is somewhat different.

I told my shaper what I want, he said I'm nuts but with some arm twisting he'll make it if I insist.

Been seeing quite a few bamboo 'tanas around the place lately.

Hey guys look I know I will get slammed for this so I will explain myself as best I can. If you want a custom board or be able to get advice on what is best for you GO TO A LOCAL SHAPER!! But if you know what your after exactly there are online company's selling boards from OS that rant terrible. I didnt think I would ever buy a foreign board until I wanted to buy a mini Simmons recently after asking what noosa longboards would do one for, shaped by Tom Wegener a longtime family friend they came back with $1100 now I must say pricing has nothing to do with Tom and he is imo one of the best shapers in the country. But for that money I had to look elsewhere. I brought a mini Simmons and a retro fish from sanctum online for less then the one board and they are the two funnest boards I have ever owned. Look I'm sure the one made by Tom would of been as good or better. But for product price and quality I really can't argue with what I got. For those who don't know what a mini Simmons is we are talking about 5'8" of board. $200 per foot is way to expensive for me and I presume most other people. Look I'm not saying these boards are for everyone but I really do think some manufacturers price themselves out of the market especially for anything slightly different. But if you are after a standard shortv or longboard there are plenty of good local shapers at still reasonable prices. Look all just my opinion but it is what it is

Cheers

Hey Tosh
Whats the build quality and shaping like on the sanctum Mini simms? Been eyeing up one of those for a while now.
I usually support local Shapers but have to agree $110o for a 5'8 is a bit rich . Probably would be an amazing Mini simms though...

I have a hard time with the logic of what you just wrote, I have a hard time with the logic about "mates rates". If you were going to buy a board off of a long time friend, wouldn't you be happy to pay the full price for his services so the a "mates" business can prosper as he has enough people coming in off the street and screwing him on price?

Look I should have explained that a bit better. Noosa longboards is not Tom's shop he is hired to shape boards and as far as I know doesn't even glass them. Tom stopped making glass boards after taking up making timber boards quite some time ago and this is all his business does now. Tom's boards were NEVER anywhere near that expensive before partnering with NL. I wasnt asking for mates rates but just didn't expect inflated rates. Look I would of loved to have him shape me that board and I was happy to part with $800 - $900 depending on the boards finish but $1100. Sorry guys too rich for me.

The sanctum Simms shape and glass wise are quite good tint job not perfect but I think that might be intentional to give it a more retro look

I'm not sure that he mentioned wanting mates rates..
Like most people in small business, you go to a mate not necessarily to get a better price, but to know what you're getting for A price is going to be quality without the risk. And a mate will tell you what you need, and whether he can do it or not..

Should have been no problem getting a local one shaped for close to half the $1100 price.

I did try and find a local shaper but two years ago when I brought it I did find trouble finding a shaper with Simmons experience. The online board fit the bill for what I was chasing. Again this isn't the place to buy first boards or anything unless you know exactly what ya want and don't need advice!

Agreed. I can't believe the price to get a local custom board built really. Especially compared to the price you pay for of the rack. I've decided to get a local board built. Just need to make time to drop down, talk it over, test one and get it into the system. But To be honest i think time is an issue for many. Sometimes having to wait can be the hardest part

Me i love to troll Gumtree if we stay with the online option. Second hand boards can be great value and today i managed to pick up a Firewire Hellfire for a good price SHould fill the gap whilst getting a board built.

When talking mini-Simmons the price for a good one will be around $750 sans tints.
Without thinking for more than a couple of seconds....More surfboards (maroochydore)...a search for "mini-simmons quads" on my browser and then looking at the images even comes up with a More mini-simmons.
A drive down to the boardroom at Miami and you can have a DVS surfskate under your arm.
The DVS will have the best re-sale if you don't like it.
Buying a board at Noosa longboards is of course a premium shopping experience for the cashed up.
Dabomb at Maroochydore have a bunch of More mini-simmons in stock.
