Can anyone direct me to a site or book that has guidlines for the type of fitness training needed for surfing big waves (paddle in)

I'm 40 years old with moderate fitness and ability and want to surf bigger waves from here on in. Summer time in Perth is a good time to train for next winter.

I saw an article in Tracks a few years ago about hypoxia training - sprinting holding your breath followed by underwater swimming for hold downs, then yoga and fitball with dumbells for strength and flexibility.

You see snippets here and there about what the tour guys are getting up to, so it must be out there somewhere.

I think I have all the right elements above, it's just how to tie it all together, reps/frequency etc that I can't get my head around.

go to the gym and get the pt guy that knows somthing about surfing and you will be in pain
then inbtween the gym join a swimming club then you will be in a new type of pain

then go to a brain doc to get you to push over the edge

and after all that you will get more waves and girls

Theres a bloke at secret harbour called combat fitness. he seems to have a grip on surf fittness. I dont know the number but the fellas at clearwater train with him. Bench presses and rowing machines tend to work. Stand Up Paddle boarding is aparrently very good for core fittness.

Thanks Gary, I know Ricky and the Ryan from Clearwater really well, 3 out of my 4 teenagers are sponsored by Steve & Nat Del Rosso and I've ridden Steve's boards for 20 years.

Ryan put me on to a guy on the Gold Coast (I'll be there on Tuesday ) called Nam who runs a training program group called Breath Equalising Training (B.E.T)

Pretty interesting stuff involving training designed to boost your oxygenation and help you survive without air in harsh physical situations (hold downs)

What stops me from paddling in to bigger waves is not having the confidence in my breathing capacity/fitness. I know I am going to stack it at some point and get dragged through the break, maybe a few less beers and some training will get me there.

The biggest waves we surfed were 2 - 3 foot Snapper (far out that's a long wave) and 2 - 3 foot Duranbah (love this place) At this size, it is amazing how gutless these places are. I'm sure the juice kicks in as it gets bigger.
