heading into Telo/Ments later this year on boat trip, wondering what boards you guys would put into the quiver. i normally ride a 6'1 up to about 5 ft then a 6'5 up to 6 - 8ft. Any bigger than that i don't go out really, so was thinking a 6'1, a 6'5 and the third spot is up for grabs, what do you reckon?
Hi Barndog, I took a 6'3", 6'4" and a 6'8" on a boat trip to the Ments last Sept/Oct and found the 6'3" did'nt have enough volume in it to get into the waves quick enough as most waves there are already barreling down the reef before the take off spot and you need to give yourself every opportunity to get into them. I would'nt even bother with a 6'1" and next time i go i will take a nice 6'6" rounded pin tail as the go to board for most conditions. You might be young and super fit but if your on the wrong side of 40 like myself take some boards with a little bit of extra volume in them. Hope this helps a little bit?
Next time I will take 6,5 & 6,8 round pins and only two dragin three boards through 3 different airports sucks big time.
Unless you are surfing waves over 8ft you wont need three boards as you are unlikly to snap one. IMO..
thanks guys, looks like i might rethink the quiver. i did surf the telos bout 15 years ago(feral style) and spent most of my time on a 6,1 and only rode the bigger board, the 6,5 on the one hollow wave we found. All my boards are rounded pins, from 6.0 and up, they just go better down here on the steeper reefs. Having never been to the ments it does look like a lot of the waves are pretty hollow so based on your guys advice i might can the idea of taking a quad 5'10 and throw in a 6'6. I gotta take 3, I've broken too many boards in the last 2 years, though none since i started with the carbon rails. The 6'1 will still have to come, if we get small surf and i don't have it i would spew. cheers boys
Over head when flat, shortboards need not apply.
If you get anything, and I mean anything under head high I would be very suprised.
Most places will have swell magnets we had two when I was over there, so when out the front was flat round the corner there were two waves way over head high.
We NEVER went without surf when we were up there..
i'm only a little fella, bout 172cm, bout 73kgs, depending on how much beer i've been drinking, from Dunsborough and surf at a reasonable level
Definately take a smaller board then! Around the 6'1" mark or even shorter if you take a fish. There is nothing worse then being stuck with a log on a small day. Heck, I'm 88kg and 6'1" and still have a heap of fun on my 5'8" fish even when its 5-6ft and hollow. Get amongst it! Definately take something around 6'5-6'6 when it gets a bit bigger!
Been riding Dave Mannion's boards DMD for about 16 years now, one of those things i reckon, if your getting what you want, why change it, even when i see a nice board, like that Bourton quad of yours (that looks fun), I just go to Dave and get him to make one up. I'm still thinking a nice, modern tail/usual railed but slightly wider up forward, in a tri/quad might be fun to take
