Headed to the SW last weekend with some lady friends. As my fun for the trip we went to a variety of better known spots. Sorry to those who don't like names being applied to pictures, but if people don't know about these spots, they must have been living under a rock.
First day was North Point. It was really trying to do its thing, but it just wasn't really happening - hence it being so empty with the size.
The stuff around the corner from South Point looking good.
Equally so the stuff around the corner from North Point
The next day was Smiths and Yalls
The groms were everywhere! Quite frustrating at times.
This guy doesn't know what he missed.
Noiiiiice
Finished it off at a cosy Meelup
The first shot of Smiths was on a day that would have worried some. Supertubes was gnarly and big; some of the rides the body boarders were getting would have been perfect 10s. Hairy stuff, seriously. I was trying to get some on the sandbar immediately south, but even that was having perth like rips racing through after the biggest sets. I paddled down to the smallest part of the beachie and for 5 mins surfed there until guys started running up the beach to us frantically waving us in. I got out to see the last sighting of a massive dorsal fin - either a huge dolphin or a medium sized shark. Glad it wasn't reported on shark alarm, coz it wasn't confirmed- but hell the thing was maybe 70 metres out and very easily visible (a huge fin). Everyone waited around for about 10mins to see what happened, but we didn't see it again, so some people got back in. That was pretty exciting, I thought. But obviously not appreciated.
Went back the next day and everything was fine - got perhaps the most intense wave of my life (was shaking on the paddle back out). They're always out there - you've just got to have your eye out and be sensible.
