Planning a trip to the Mentawis as none of my mates can come along am just going to organise myself. A fewl boats have now quite worked out so i think i will just try to organise a land based surf camp.

Can anyone that knows the area well, recomend which camp is the best to stay at for access to the most quality waves as well as a nice place to stay ?

(though if anyone has another angle i would love to hear about it)

Perth based life long surfer.

the best 2 to stay at are either kandui or waveapark in the playgrounds area for variety of waves, i think macaronis is still being rebuilt and the major rub there is the distance to other waves apart from the main break
kandui has the added bonus of the most consistent 2 turnwave in the whole area within paddling distance of the resort, 4bobs ,which at first you think this is **** but you soon grow to love because it breaks every day and quite a few others to suit any ability and ..the 2 best waves in the area are also only five minutes
christie at wavepark(hideaway is right out the front but not for the fainthearted) is a probably the most astute guide as he hates wasting petrol or power so you are pretty well guaranteed to get surf!
personal preference is kandui as the food is great and the beer is always cold and they photograph every surf .....last trip ended up with 1500 photo's ,enough to bore any relative or friend

yeah hard choice, Ive had a look at both websites and I think wavepark is a little better value for money ie; wavepark includes the ferry and only takes 12 people instead of 18...
looks like my annual surf trip has been found for next year

Not that easy to organise , i have set dates that i have a leave pass on - and as with he boat trips the camps only take you in on certain days which of course do not conincide with my schedule.

Might not work this year, looks like i have to go another option.

^^^^^been there a few times many years ago(13 years ago).
Wasnt flash places to stay like this place back then.Really nice place to hang.

Dont expect the usuall indo barreling top to bottom style waves though.
Its a pretty soft break.Deepish water style break.Lots of fun.

Dont get me wrong ,its a big wave destination for some as it can handel any swell no matter how big it gets.
And it gets BIG,,open to most swells.
But if your expecting g-land style barrels,,,it not the spot to go.

Beautiful island,white sand,covered in palm trees,postcard water.
The lagoon use to be full of star fish,or as we called them, ninja stars as we had ninja star fight on the way out to the waves

There are some good waves on the near by little islands that are well worth organising a local fishing boat to take you there. The new big resorts probly have their own boats I guess.

but a mate of mine went over this year and the local seaweed farmers have started useing empty water bottles as floats to hold the lines on.
I guess it is a form of recycling but the whole inside lagoon inside the reef is covered in millions of floating plastic bottles.
Sorta wreaks the beauty of the spot.
Some of the most awsome sunsets, drinking bintangs, sore from surfing all day, watching the sun go down,,,,,aaaahhhhhh the serenity.
SUNSETS
LOCAL MARKET DAY
NINJA STAR FISH if you copped one in the head they nearly knocked you out.
