yeah I think that a review should be done..........

Too lowfi for me, nice cruiser tho. Nothing wrong with the board its just me

Yeah she is a completely different beast to yr normal stash of boards. If you do not try you will never know........I know that after 5 surfs on my Sweet Potatoe I thought I had brought a lemon and would never be able to ride it. Then one day it just clicked.

Hey CMC - would love to see some photo's of your board - I used to have a 6'6" quad of similar style - went well. It was a great board to take away when you only wanted to take one with you. Not a high performance board in the small stuff but with the buoyancy factor you could catch anything and it used to handle the bigger stuff ok. Infact its the board in my avatar. The Green Machine has since been retired after 4yrs of trusty use.

Pics of the green machine?

Hey Ted, I was thinking the other day after I shaped it that I should have took some pics before and after.

I still have to spray, glass, install the box and sand it though. I will try to remember to get some pics when I am doing it. I usually just get too excited to stop though.

Hopefully this week I will get to do some more. Pretty busy right now.

I have a lot of respect and envy for those who have the ability and the means to shape their own boards. Awesome doesn't even begin to describe it.

I wouldn't even know where to start.

There is a couple of great DVDs about on shaping and glassing, Ive got two from JC (John Carper) and they take you from cutting out the blank to glassing and sanding. If ya wanna borrow them you can, Ive watched them a million times

well go make a farken board doggie suba i couldnt have said that any better

Cheers mate. For me it's not the technical aspects holding me back. I consider myself pretty handy; it's the design aspect. I know less than nothing about how surfboards are designed for different conditions. It's bizzare because I've owned so many boards and been surfing long enough yet know SFA about how different shapes affect your ride.

That bit I can help with, I have a few designs on my PC if you are keen.

Youtube also have some great vids of the shaping process. I would go and ask a shaper nicely (esp if u have brought boards off him before) if you could watch.

If you can luck onto a good design on Aku and get it cut it's almost harder to screw up the finishing than it is to make it better.

Lots of people are fooled into thinking anything that comes off the machine will work though, when you get guys with years of experience of inputting rockers that work etc that's when the machine makes magic happen.

When Murray Bourton changed from his router profiler that he had been using for over 25 years to go onto Aku Shaper he made sure the rockers that were designed on the computer were exact matches to those on timber after cutting. He made sure that his 25 years of design evolution were translated across.

It looks easy and it is to use, making the designs do the right thing and actually understanding them is the harder part. I am kind of fortunate to have shapers look at my designs and give me advice so that something OK pops out.

If you read swaylocks or surfermag's design forum you'll see it seems to be pretty hard to shape a dog (no pun intended). There are some boards out there that you'd reckon would suck that people are frothing over. E.g. read the surfermag thread on Tomo's MPH boards. You wouldn't reckon it'd work as a HPSB, yet everyone swears it does. Same bloke's riding a wakeboard shape in waves, like 4'-something, reckons it works, there's a youtube of him on it:

Yep, there's one thing I know from doing a couple for myself. They always feel great and even if they really are dogs you'll make them work. You make the extra effort to have your own creation feel OK.

If you just paid $700 though you'd be very dissapointed.

Another thing Legion. Thomo's dad is a shaper and mad inventor. Have you seen that dude getting barreled on the surf mat? That's his dad.

Point is Thomo rips and he has also been shaping for a long time. His boards are experimental but based upon other stuff he has been riding for quite a while. His fishes are pretty good also.

I'm not implying he's a dog shaper - in fact, the opposite based on reviews and his vids. I'd love to try some of his shapes. But based on conventional wisdom they're hardly normal.

My point is don't worry about not knowing anything. Sure, have a read about some reasonable rockers and rail profiles and outlines, but sometimes it's OK to just grab out some paper and sketch up your ideas, grab a chunk of foam and start shaping. EPS is cheap. Throw it out if you don't like it.

And with that I fully agree.

It's too much fun not to have a go......
