Did the smart thing and chased a wave this morning and did a bit of work.
Just checked the results of round 5
Parko 20 points defeats JJF 19.2
CJ took out Kelly
Nat Young over Adriano
Fanning over Freddy P
Seems to be a problem with heats on demand as yesterday is not even up.
Itching to see it.
Hope they get their act together
Tomorrow is going to be solid so might be finals day
So we have 5 aussies in final 8
doggie, that air was something where you just can't quite believe he pulled it off. Whereas a deep barrel if the wave is perfect is more dependent on the wave not the surfer. Guys were getting barrelled like that all day long. Parko's was same-same. No-one else was getting 10s.
Thanks Legion - cant wait to watch
Would be great to see Taj or Josh Kerr take it out. It would put Taj into proper contention for the title with a big result.
For JK it would be great to see hime take out his first
Be ready to cringe. The first one he does this dumbarse look-back soul-arch thing as he comes out, with a big tongue poke-out. On the second one, even worse, at the end he looks to the judges and holds up both hands to signal 10. WTF? Do that and you should get 0.
I love Parko's surfing but hate claims (by anyone). You'd better have just done something mind-blowing to deserve a self-claim. If it's one where you're just stoked within and can't help a private claim that's OK (still prefer the poker face). If it's one where you're directing it to the crowd and puffing up your chest, GTFO. That's Brazilian-style.
Legion
agree not a 20.
Second yes not the first but I think Parko did win unless you deduct for claims
First wave, barrel to blown roundhouse - 10?
Second wave was good, but the claim?
when you think about it Legion it is part of virtually every sport on the planet. I guess the only difference between a soccer player's celebration of a goal, a tennis player's "c'mon" or a surfer's claim is that they might be trying to influence the result of the contest. I would hope that the judges are immune to this and simply judge what they did on the wave. As a spectator I see it as a competitor doing all they can do to win.
In comparison to Parko's first 10, Kerrzy just got a comparable barrel, completed his first cutback, blew his second and got a 5.33.
I know that its a different heat so different scale etc but take a look at round 4 Kerr, Slater Florence heat
mutiple waves better than parko's
so to say that was a perfect heat doesnt make sense
And again, Kerrzy with a better, cleaner barrel, completes a roundhouse and 8.17. Yes, different heats but when there are only a few perfect 20 heats ever and Joel gets his name up there, it diminishes the meaning.
If you look around on the Oakley site or youtube Kelly talks about why it happened.
When you think about it, when you're surfing sick conditions with your mates you always carry on when you get awesome waves no different in my opinion. Same thing when guys pull of sick freestyle motocross tricks they go nuts, as you would with all the adrenaline, all the training and hardwork that goes on behind the scenes it's all part of the show makes for good watching who gives a ****.
I distinctly remember this one time as a 17 year old grom with a mate. Pulled a sick roundhouse, full vert on the rebound at 4' Mrs Porridge's. He was hooting and going on saying it was my best one ever. I acted super cool - "Really? Nah, don't think so. Do those all the time" with the full poker face, despite surfing with him weekly for years so he was fully aware.
I guess I just don't like Parko's personality display, which is a shame because he's a sick surfer.

It would seem that the judges are gluttonous for punishment, painting themselves into the kind of corner that insisted they give Joel Parkinson two 10s when he barely had one. This is not to say that he didn?t deserve the heat win over John John Florence, but if the 2John shooter landed that corked spin, he should have won the heat, but the scale wouldn?t have allowed for it. But he didn?t, and so now any discussion about it is purely academic.http://www.surfinglife.com.au/news/world-tour/10327-we-were-robbed
