Hey all, probably an oldie this one but what are people riding as there small wave shooter these days??
Went on a trip over east to Noosa in early and Jan and scored the points yeaw!
Noticed alot of crew riding shorter wider boards a like Al merrick pod and Simon Anderson DTF.
Any advice? I'm looking for performance board for attacking weak gutless slop
I've got one of these
http://www.rusty.com/au/products/category/surfboards-au/S-Series-au (bottom of page)
Used it quite a bit in smallish and fat Legian last year and it was a blast!
Similar outline to a Pod but with a nicer performance rail IMO as the Pod's rails look very "boxy". Only downside is the deck glass job is pretty light on and I have heaps of pressure dings especially around the tail after only a couple of surfs.
Some other cool looking alternative styles in their lineup as well Magic Door, 84, Dwart etc.
I recently got a Mod Fish from Mt Woodgee in Currumbin QLD. I am 92kgs and can ride my 6'4 in anything from knee to head high and it rips. Paddles real well too so I dont miss out on any waves. I am now going to sell my 6'1 Rusty 'Creepy Catz' twin fin fish as I can use the Mod Fish in mushburgers and have more fun.
This is from the website;
Mod Fish surfboards:
this is a blend of traditional outlines and modern rocker and rail. The principle is to flatten the bottom curve (for easy paddling and weak waves), and increase outline curve (for manoeuvrability). This makes the MOD FISH great for small, slow or fat waves because speed and tight turning may be maintained.
Got SDR for clearwater to shape me a 5'10 - 21- 2 1/2 swallow tail fish about 4 years ago, love it. Im 6'0 and 93kg, its really easy to paddle, super loose and a
sh!t load of fun. Get ready to triple your wave count on those small days
Forgot to mention, it's a twin fin, its got those massive glassed over timber fcs fins in it, gives it that old school look
I bought me a webber mini-fish about a year back and surf it as a twin.
I'm 95kg and 5'10 - the board is 6'3 x 21.5 x 3.5http://www.surfindustries.com/surfboards/webber_miniFish.php
Obviously theres a tonne of volume there, so I can paddle into things my mini-mal cant plus the board is super light and responsive. Its great fun, even more so on the days when the surf isn't crap and mushy.
Have you considered a custom board? Could check out shapers and they'd make it specifically to your needs not to mention ur $$ is going to a better place. Something like the 'Wilkes Pyg'?
I'm with Yep, got a 6'3" fish from Steve at Clearwater, lots of volume, goes tops in the small stuff. Can't go wrong with a local shaper, I've also had good boards from Chris Mckenzie, Dave Macca, Campbell Quinn.. local WA blokes and the price is good. Sorry about the shameless plug, and no I'm not a WA shaper!
Just letting ya know SDR isnt a local shaper anymore, all his boards come out of base in QLD, nothing wrong with it but there not made in the west.
For those who wanna do more than just CATCH small waves-

PS
+1 for Chris Mckenzie (Oceanline)
Im 6'2" and about 95kgs been riding a 5'8" Firewire Sweet Potato and it has rekindled surfing for me - so much fun handles up to head and a bit - hollow waves at take off are its only real shortfall - ride the biggest fins you can find - so much fun and so many waves!!
I have a Cult 5 '10" x 21 x 2.5 twinnie. Its not a preformance fish at all , rather just an old cruiser. Im 86 kgs @ 6ft and can still wind it up pretty quick but it gets a bit slidey once it hits a sucky pocket or over shoulder high. I love it and ride it heaps especially at this time of year.
Another positive I like is that my wave count goes up riding it and I can get onto waves easier.
guys get in touch with steve del rosso (clearwater). yes he is shaping out of the east but he is still a sandgroper. ask him for a "cobbler" model shortboard they are really good in small gutless mush up to over head slabby stuff. have a crack u wont be dissapointed...
had a go on a pod today, 6'1 x 21 1/4 x 2 1/2, in 2-3ft in ordinary waves, really liked it, i'm 80kgs
yeah a Merrick custom built, it's me brothers, he said i could have it for $400 bucks, seriously thinking about it, he recons it cost $800 new would that be right?...he's conned me before.[}:)] although it's good condition, near new and no damage.
edit: liked the area in the nose too
