Hi guys, Just a question on routers, Is a normal size router the better vs a router /trimmer one handed type
Been trying to get some gear from shapers but no reply
Edit, This is for different fin plugs I only deal in fcs but need to expand
Paul
Hi mate,
in my past days of shaping I always used a one handed router but it was a scary little beast and you had to be very careful or it would would drag you all over the blank. I used it mainly to route out templates for fin plugs - never did FCS though.
If I were ever to go back to shaping I would buy a proper two handed router for better control.
good luck
Thanks, i see some guys use the one handed but i like the two handed idea but trying to see through a template might be hard
Thanks i guess the top photo then, i picked this because of the large handle almost one handed but more viewing room
I use a smaller trim router, there easier to handle on the board and the base plate is smaller so it fit's to most concaves better and the templates aren't huge so a larger bit opening could cause the router to slip off the template.
Go the trimmer, when fitting future fin boxes you can buy a jig from futures which a trimmer fits in makes the whole process piece of cake.
hey paul, the trim router is all you will need if you are doing futures...fcs fusion etc...you will need the two handed number for big fin boxes...although you could get by with the small one if you just take smaller cuts... I just purchased a royobi that was cheaper than the makita you have pictured and its fine...most all of the jigs you will find are more suited to the small pencil routers aswell.
