I finally had a go at shaping my first board.
Its a mini simmons style tomo vanguard inspired design, using a template i modified off a blending curves template (a 5'8x22 3/4" mini sim).
It was shaped from a burford 7'7 blank. 6oz bottom, with a 4 and 6 oz deck. full length concave with max 1/4" concave under the front foot, into channel tail max 3mm vee.
Is a fairly hard rail until mid board.
front fins toed at 1 deg, rears are parallel.
Final dimensions 5'9x22 1/4"x 2 15/16"
Great work! Did you glass and sand her yourself? For my next build I want to do a Vanguard inspired toy but am yet to find one I can get some guidance from. Hope you have a great time surfing it - nothing beats that first wave on yr first board and realise that the thing not only floats you but also works. Enjoy and well done that looks like a super finish.
Are you sure about the shape, Bertie? That's an awful lot of foam and you look reasonably in shape ...

you are correct mate, but i'm working on a mine site 3:1 so paddle strength is not so great these days.
but I've always ridden a fair bit of volume and gone ok.
Ted, I shaped, glassed and sanded myself.
The girlfriend helped with the graphics and some of the glassing, but mainly as a second set of eyes to make sure everything was symmetrical and or looking good.
I watched the video on the vanguard and to be honest that thing has some serous work going on under neath. That thing would be hard to emulate, but your board looks amazing Bertie Well done.
The level of artistic flare and the quality of finish that all of the home boards getting made have is unreal. I cant even manage a neat bit of art work on mine
Looks better than the actual vanguard I reckon. Is that the first board you have glassed? Excellent job if it is. I made some boards in the late 90s with my bro and it took us at least a few boards to get the glassing that sweet. I remember glassing the first one...it was a pretty hot day and we were freaking as it was setting too fast....turned into a fun board though and remember the bro sliding into some monsters on it a a certain renowned offshore island left. Wish I knew where that board is now....
Thanks Ross! Wow a compliment from a pro!
Yes doggie it was part solar cure catalyst for the lam and regular for the hot coat.

You have me stumped sometimes legion. You seem so focused on other people riding something that is the litres a pro would ride or it is too big in your mind. Credit to you if you are blasting on undersized boards, yet now I'm starting to think is this some sort of denial in age to you. A almost **** that I'm going to ride what the pros ride no matter what, and I will never age. I understand the intricacies of smaller boards and the more fine a feeling you get from them. Yet most off us,well me,we sSurf pretty average waves and I would far rather a board that will give the most enjoyment than something that will make me struggle/not enjoy it as much.
