This is what it came to in Sth Africa, a group of enterprising surfers made up this hoax sign, apparently it actually worked, and a local ranger even ordered some guys out of the water

the last few posts beg the question, are SUP and LBer's new to the sport or are they simply progressing to these options as the years advance? I get the whole "surf everything" mantra and understand how age can also dictate what craft you ride but surely an experienced "water person" can control these things plus has an awareness of surf etiquette.Learning to surf will always cause some issues to other water users but we need to be aware of the damage a larger bit of fibreglass will do to others, seems from some of the stories on this thread that this is not the case and that's not good enough. Not sure SB's are the one's that need to look at themselves.

Having spent years battling long boarders to get a wave on a short board at certain spots and now seeing SUP's added to the mix and grabbing everything they can I understand the frustrations.

But the reality is most short board riders are just as greedy.

I also have to do battle with the
"always have to be the inside surfer"
"just had one but didnt make it and because I didnt make it I want the next one surfer"
"I think I am better than you so I should get all the waves surfer"

Seriously when was the last time you passed a wave up to a stranger on the outside of you and told him it was his/her turn.

When you are paddling past someone after having got a wave do you take a mental note that even though you want to be deaper its that persons turn and give them the nod on the next wave.

Called a learner you didnt know into a wave ?

The reality is surfing sadly is a reflection of the worst of human behaviour which is greed and wanting as much as possible. LB's and SUP's are just getting more because they can.

Just like the better shortboarder who can sit deaper at a reef break generally will grab as many as they can because they can!

Remember the saying about people in glass houses ...

I did last Saturday, I was having a good surf at a local reef and was sitting a bit further out waiting for the bigger ones and I was letting heaps of waves go through that I could have caught and after catching one I sat wide watched a few people get some then paddled back to my spot.
I think I got about 12 waves in two hours I think, maybe a couple more but it was one of the best surfs Ive had for ages where there was a good vibe in the water and guys were chatting to each other.
It was a great day

Likewise for me on Sunday...

Chatting to a couple of guys (who I did not know) who were clearly not getting as many waves and I just sat back a few times and said "yours - paddle!"...

To repay the favour those same blokes did not even lay flat when they saw me position for the set waves...

What goes around comes around.

Did get dropped in by a booger tho' - kid must have been about 12yo... let it be, but would have given him the word if he had even looked like doing it again.

Yeah good post. I agree and always share around. I often will find that I'm not as keen for the bigger waves and prefer the smaller shaped ones and after a quick chat we all settle in. At my local on Sunday with about 5 guys out we all called each other in. Guys were calling waves as they started to role and the rest just sat back and watched, enjoyed and complemented each other.

I find the best way to brake the ice is hoot and give someone a complement upfront. Its the old stick your hand out and see what happens

Boogers will never learn, they are incapable of anything intelligent. They often can't even hold a conversation. Sometimes one will shine but he soon learns and gets a real board

What do you guys do when you see someone on a SUP ripping harder than you do on your shortboard?

What would happen if you swapped boards and while you struggled to even stand to paddle the guy blew you out of the water on your own board?

What then huh? What then?

It would happen to you every day around here.

Point is there are some bull**** generalizations written here. Only a kook would stick their head in the sand and think a shortboard is the appropriate board for every condition. Only a kook would think that everyone that rides a SUP is a kook. Plenty guys rip on short, longboard and SUP.

Then you get the 'I'd rather climb a rock' or something. Like that rationalizes the fact that if the waves arent good there's better things to do than go to the ocean... I'd argue that any time in the water on whatever you like makes the time when the waves are good even better. Don't let your ego and opinion of your own ability or whatever get in the way of enjoying yourself no matter what the equipment. If riding a bodyboard is fun for you do it..

Its not about who rips the hardest, or who can ride their craft the best - why do you guys always go down this avenue?

The biggest problem with SUP'ers is the lack of control you guys have when you're NOT on your boards.

Even the Lairds of the world have ZERO control of a 12 foot long lump of fibreglass when its hurtling along in the whitewash at a crowded break.

How thick are you guys that you think this is a 'My board is better than your board' debate?

There's a time and a place for everything, but Stand Up Paddle Boards combined with large surf at a crowded break is a recipe for disaster.

Because the argument here from 99% of posters is that all SUP riders are Kooks..... How thick are you to not have read that?

The point is that there are kooks on every craft. Many longboards are heavier, longer and have longer leashes than SUP, they would do more damage to more people and have been for years. But you can control them eh?

I'm in the mood for an argument anyway so keep 'em coming, you can be my afternoons entertainment.

Saw an SUP'er go over the falls this morning. A SB'er was paddling out to the right of it. That SUP board just flew. Probably missed the guys head by a hand. Another SUP most likely a learner was going straight. Saw him bail too and guess what was infront of him: a bunch of beginners.

There's a few locals whom rips on SUP's but the majority are your weekend warriors taking up a sport they know nothing about. Problem is stereotypes arise because of how bad things can get if a SUP'er gets in trouble. Much like sharks. They aren't a problem but when they stuff up, it gets blown out.

I let a booger have a wave the other day... sacrilege. Was probably the best of that morning too JB is right though, she managed to blow up my ego with compliments although I'm not that good

Cmon then big boy lets have this out

The only person I have ever seen rip on a SUP and Im not saying there are other people who rip the same but dogman is the best and Im told he shreds on a SB as well.
I like to SB and I dont go out when the swell is too small.
I dont live close to the beach 15-20mins away so Im not that interested in transporting 8-12' boards to the beach.
I dont get excited by small waves, chest high is the minimum for me and double head these days is the max depending on conditions.
If its massive I will sit and take pics or video or what ever.
If its too small I fix a board go rockclimbing or go for a swim.

If I wanted a SUP I would have one by now.
If anything I would buy a midlength for when its marginal.

Logical?

It's logical mate, and I am not trying to tell anyone they should ride a SUP either, especially if you can already surf. My point is not to generalize, I read a whole bunch of sweeping statements and if anything that gets me off side.

I don't care what you ride, I don't care if you ride a low volumed 6'2 when you should be on a 6'8. I don't care if you're on a surf ski, a McDonalds tray, Fun, long or Alaia or whatever. It's meant to be fun. I just think when people get this shortboard or nothing thing and everything else are kooks it drives me nuts.

And sure there are beginners on SUP's and yes they can be dangerous. I don't know the solution to that either, I just know that casting aspersions over everyone just because they ride or even just sometimes surf on a SUP is kind of dumb.

That's all my point is. Like it or hate it or whatever.

The guys in the SUP forum generally bring it on themselves, Ive only had a few little jokes in there recently and tbh dont go in as much as I used too.
There is kooks on everything that floats or whatever.
I think this year Ive missed one weekend when I didnt surf because of the conditions, I could of if I had a SUP or LB but I dont and actually welcomed the time to do other things that I dont do when Im surfing.

That's all my point is. Like it or hate it or whatever.

Hey doggie if your talk my digs at the sup guy's I know most of them over here,we have a love love relationship its all piss take and they know it,they all know I'm an ex shortboarder come longboarder who had a crack at sup'ing which wasn't my thing but I don't seriously bag them out.Jacko would kick any of you shortboards arse on a shortboard any day of the week but he enjoys his sup's more.
Its ok to have a dig with people you know, but not the ones you don't.

Your old mate Lacey and I go way back to our shortboarding days and he ripped,he now rides a sup and I a longboard does that mean we cant be friends anymore.

No mac you can do what you like.
Jacko might rip, good on him. If enjoys SUP more, I find that hard to believe but not my problem.
I like to do what I do. I dont think I need to explain myself.
This dumb thread was started by LL as a direct shot at me for the bait thread in LBs. That thread (bait) was also a joke but he took it the wrong way but hey thats LL he does what he wants. Who am I to argue?

At the end of the day you are over the other side of the county and who cares what I ride and what you ride?

I know I dont give a sh!t

In my experience the greedy wave hogs comes back to age not what they are riding. Quite often they are in their teens or early twenties with energy to burn and snake inside everyone else.

Or they sit inside at a point break (and this applies to SB ers) duck diving the ones that break further inside and take off deeper than anyone else wants to sit, no prob there except they keep paddling out and sitting there all day.
