This is what it came to in Sth Africa, a group of enterprising surfers made up this hoax sign, apparently it actually worked, and a local ranger even ordered some guys out of the water
the last few posts beg the question, are SUP and LBer's new to the sport or are they simply progressing to these options as the years advance? I get the whole "surf everything" mantra and understand how age can also dictate what craft you ride but surely an experienced "water person" can control these things plus has an awareness of surf etiquette.Learning to surf will always cause some issues to other water users but we need to be aware of the damage a larger bit of fibreglass will do to others, seems from some of the stories on this thread that this is not the case and that's not good enough. Not sure SB's are the one's that need to look at themselves.
Having spent years battling long boarders to get a wave on a short board at certain spots and now seeing SUP's added to the mix and grabbing everything they can I understand the frustrations.
But the reality is most short board riders are just as greedy.
I also have to do battle with the
"always have to be the inside surfer"
"just had one but didnt make it and because I didnt make it I want the next one surfer"
"I think I am better than you so I should get all the waves surfer"
Seriously when was the last time you passed a wave up to a stranger on the outside of you and told him it was his/her turn.
When you are paddling past someone after having got a wave do you take a mental note that even though you want to be deaper its that persons turn and give them the nod on the next wave.
Called a learner you didnt know into a wave ?
The reality is surfing sadly is a reflection of the worst of human behaviour which is greed and wanting as much as possible. LB's and SUP's are just getting more because they can.
Just like the better shortboarder who can sit deaper at a reef break generally will grab as many as they can because they can!
Remember the saying about people in glass houses ...

Likewise for me on Sunday...
Chatting to a couple of guys (who I did not know) who were clearly not getting as many waves and I just sat back a few times and said "yours - paddle!"...
To repay the favour those same blokes did not even lay flat when they saw me position for the set waves...
What goes around comes around.
Did get dropped in by a booger tho' - kid must have been about 12yo... let it be, but would have given him the word if he had even looked like doing it again.
What do you guys do when you see someone on a SUP ripping harder than you do on your shortboard?
What would happen if you swapped boards and while you struggled to even stand to paddle the guy blew you out of the water on your own board?
What then huh? What then?
It would happen to you every day around here.
Point is there are some bull**** generalizations written here. Only a kook would stick their head in the sand and think a shortboard is the appropriate board for every condition. Only a kook would think that everyone that rides a SUP is a kook. Plenty guys rip on short, longboard and SUP.
Then you get the 'I'd rather climb a rock' or something. Like that rationalizes the fact that if the waves arent good there's better things to do than go to the ocean... I'd argue that any time in the water on whatever you like makes the time when the waves are good even better. Don't let your ego and opinion of your own ability or whatever get in the way of enjoying yourself no matter what the equipment. If riding a bodyboard is fun for you do it..
Saw an SUP'er go over the falls this morning. A SB'er was paddling out to the right of it. That SUP board just flew. Probably missed the guys head by a hand. Another SUP most likely a learner was going straight. Saw him bail too and guess what was infront of him: a bunch of beginners.
There's a few locals whom rips on SUP's but the majority are your weekend warriors taking up a sport they know nothing about. Problem is stereotypes arise because of how bad things can get if a SUP'er gets in trouble. Much like sharks. They aren't a problem but when they stuff up, it gets blown out.
I let a booger have a wave the other day... sacrilege. Was probably the best of that morning too JB is right though, she managed to blow up my ego with compliments although I'm not that good
Hey doggie if your talk my digs at the sup guy's I know most of them over here,we have a love love relationship its all piss take and they know it,they all know I'm an ex shortboarder come longboarder who had a crack at sup'ing which wasn't my thing but I don't seriously bag them out.Jacko would kick any of you shortboards arse on a shortboard any day of the week but he enjoys his sup's more.
Its ok to have a dig with people you know, but not the ones you don't.
Your old mate Lacey and I go way back to our shortboarding days and he ripped,he now rides a sup and I a longboard does that mean we cant be friends anymore.
i find as i get older and more mature the manifest aggression i used to feel at people riding different sorts of surf craft has been absorbed by my acceptance of the true zen and soul i now get from my surfing journey ....
no discrimination..... i pretty well hate all other people in the water equally now !!
In my experience the greedy wave hogs comes back to age not what they are riding. Quite often they are in their teens or early twenties with energy to burn and snake inside everyone else.
Or they sit inside at a point break (and this applies to SB ers) duck diving the ones that break further inside and take off deeper than anyone else wants to sit, no prob there except they keep paddling out and sitting there all day.
