finally after 3wks. of no-go due to bad weather and fully booked i finally visited this place a speck of an island right in the middle of nowhere and after 2days and 6hrs. worth of walking in-and-out paths i finally bumped into Ulrich a swiss who sails and lives there part-time looking for the same thing for sailing and quiet relaxation and the paths we had to trek which was peacefully nice we finally decided on this location hidden from even the local teacher who knew most of the place
and is by coincidence beside 'ross' an aussie non-windsurfer but i still have to hear from the owner and his kin where we offered roughly 250aus$ since they have no use for it but rather need land for planting. The back of the beach is also part of the package but i opted to tell Juan the owner that me and Ulrich really don't need it maybe in the future. Another beachfront near the city but a little bit expensive and the flat offshore strip the drop-in local sailors and foreigners do their sailing during the season up to this and past this sandspit ..i haven't met the other 2 since it was off season but me and ulrich share the same-quiet, basic necessities, wifi for him and a retirement place later for me hopefully and enjoy sunset dinners like this

it is a nice idyllic place very simple..i went to the local police only 3 of them having coffee and asked what the latest crime was and can't remember but only a fight between 2 drunks during last year's fiesta and the 2 hombre's were from a different islandtheir main crop is cashew nuts..next to the police station was the Phil. Atmospheric geographical provincial station however a bit antiquated showed me windspeed graphs during the season from oct. to april and the mean ave. is 19kts. and ave. gusts 28 not so windy for some but good enough for me..the main town is walkable and meals are very inexpensive i spent an ave. of 3aus$ per day..lodging was 10aus$ a/c and cable but since i had no time to find where Ulrich was staying with only a fan i opted to check in immediately since i had only 2 days to survey the island..the place i chose and am being helped by the local high school teacher to contact the owners is 1km. northeast of the grassy airport..boat fare going there from Panay is 8aus$ a/c economy bunks where most of the foreign backpackers bound for Palawan use..from Manila take a plane to Iloilo and take Milagrosa or Montenegro lines they have their own websites or via Palawan..i was a bit apprehensive to leave things around like a celfone which i inadvertently did in front of the lodging house across the street to buy soda and get money inside the room and not one even bothered to try sit beside it and have a look..i guess am just paranoid from the more bustling citiesnice thing about it maybe L'fish is more familiar is that the proximity to the Tubattaha Reefs, Coron Islands and the smaller 25 islands that surround this place is accessible by big pumpboats..if ever you have a chance wineman i can accompany you the "roughneck" way though..and go thru paths like this one and soak in the chirping and solitude

Whats the deal for buying land over there? Is it an expensive process and what sort of land title do you get? If you want to build on it do you have to go through a local council or planning authority or do you just give the local mayor a couple of hundred dollars and do whatever you like?

hey firiebob and moby even if i haven't seen you blokes up close and you just wanna have a speedy quiet sail and a brew to talk about it then whatever's mine you can usemoby on this particular one am in contact with the local teacher and for her to negotiate everything so as not to get confused, i told her i didn't bring Ulrich the windsurfer cuz owners might see $$$'s i just offered a low amount first and start from there..teacher will check tomorrow with the city assessor's office if the land is only sold by rights or owned by a tax declaration receipt..from what i know foreign nationals can only own 40% that's why most buy it in the name of there local girlfriend..it'll be fast but expensive if you go directly to the mayor, no planning authority..assessor assesses the land and up to you to match it with the owner..the aussie who bought land set up shop on the same strip with beach houses of cement and new design but somehow stop short without rooftops, i heard he hasn't paid in full and ran out of money and is only pensioned..better to see the local council head or baranggay captain and seek help but this will only breed corruption at the rootsam sincerely hoping for the brothers and sisters to get in touch with each other kinda hard since only sms and no landline yet..till then i can only wait for messages each day..if all goes well there still is surveying then titling then who knows what..the paper trail here goes a long way with a few hundred pesos asked in betweenwhatever comes hope it comes smooth so me and Ulrich can build simple huts for you to rent on spare change

Perhaps you can enquire into the half finished buildings.

It would be sweet to have a time share or something like that there. What are the windy months there?

fellas am just obsessed with this place so pardon the pics...till the owners are found remains to be seen and i just have to dream on and on and on...pic taken by ulrich the windsurfer yesterday before leaving for Manila as for me the slow boat back to Panayif we get this all you seabreezer's are free to come over subject to limited accomodations kiter's are welcome too we could always split the beach in half since it'll be onshore a bit so kiters at port windsurfers at starboard makes everyone happy

Would you mind clearing a bit of ground so I can pitch a tent? It wouldn't rain much in the windy season, would it??

wetty you could pitch a tent anywhere if we get this we manually estimated from the border of the aussie to the rocks is 9thousand sq.mtrs. am sure your's would fit in 3mts.sqfurther out stribo about 500mtrs. offshore seems to be a light patch of greenish water which is about 5mtrs. in width and parallels the whole place then gets dark blue am just guessing it should be a reef break and since this island is miles from nowhere and wind the wind starts cranking from far it should swell and produce waves..and of course land clearing of shrubs should be done to clean the place a bit but honestly i like it this way kinda like in the jungles

Hey JP

There has got to be a down side - nothing sounds that good. If it is though, count me in. even happy to pitch in to do some work to set some buildings up. Work in the morning - sail in the afternoon.

Salty i'd like to think there is no downside but if you really want to know the electricity pole is about 3kms. away..no water source yet..most of the islanders just dig an open pit hole bout 3mtrs. deep and hit water..i've tried it and not salty..i just have to think upsides for now and as i said your a seabreezer?! your in

A downside could be if you mix up your drinking well & your long-drop!!!

Couldn't you put in some water tanks and collect rainwater from the roof? Thats what people do in Australia unless they live in town. In regards to electricity does it cost a lot to get hooked up? Setting up wind and solar power along with storage would probably cost too much.

No telephone either probably so what could be done about that? Perhaps a wifi link to somewhere in town if there is clear line of sight. I've done that before and it works well.

Wetwilly and Sailhack, firstly in regards to drinking water open pits like a 1mtr.sq. is common and is cemented around so you really don't drop in when drunkthe most possible to tap water is the hill behind or about 300mtrs. up the road is a villager who has and might be able to share or tap from there..rooftop collection could be done but since it's a very small island 11kms. long and no mountains for clouds to accumulate hardly it rains there if it does mostly squalls and if rainy around the region..usually when a place gets developed and the local council and electrical cooperative sees potential they will try to reach the place..there are 2 mobile cell sites on top of a hill i'd say 5kms.northwest of us and a signal is not a problem..these companies provide external wifi antennae for laptops on the go

I think by "long drop", sailhack is referring to toilet facilities... make sure you dig the toilet downhill from the water hole and don't go to the wrong one in the middle of the night!!!!
