Last board I built was back in the 80's. I took a board that I liked and copied the plan shape, tweaked it a bit to suit what I wanted, then used info from a few Boards magazine tests for the rockerline.

Loved it.

I think it's under a cottage north of Toronto, built to survive Canadian winters

Slightly off topic, but Nelson have 360deg virtual tours of their Maui custom factory.. What a luxury, to have a new room set up for every manufacturing stage.. Zoom in on all the tools, rulers, CNC machines, dust extraction, stencils and jigs.. It does give an idea of the amount of tools and space required to not stuff around while making boards... Better than a 3x3 shed and a fridge pump, thats for sure,..

All this, along with their Youtube series is a fantastic initiative, would love it if Cobra could do something like this - have they got something to hide?

Back in the mid 80s we did some shaping, a few of us made some surfboards and had a go at a couple of wave boards. It was a different time though, all done with fiberglass and foam and beers with your mates so it was never serious

I've most of my boards, but it was never for "a little fun".
It's always been very serious!

And I wouldn't advise anybody to spend all that money, do all that hard work, just for a little fun.
If you're not going to do your best to make a board that'll work well for you, don't bother!

Sure it can be enjoyable making a sweet board. And there's nothing better than sailing something you've made, that works well, but that's not going to happen by accident.

raggy ill give you a tipive said this before and its a bit stale , if you want to make a board that works get an old longreef hard core, i picked one up last week for $100 with board bag and fin.
when you peel all the glass off you have a pre shaped blank and you can make the required ajustments , theres no need for divinicell just glass, the only downfall is the board will end up 1/2 a kg heavyer, now thats what i call fun, you know theres no fun in spending all the time and money on something that will end up at your local tip
the reason i prefer the hardcore is the board is a proto and if it works then you can do a carbon sandwitch, if it doesnt work then it has only cost the resin, glass and your time, i would say about $100 + $250 for glass and resin

just look around there out there
the three boards have similar rockers & the f2 weighs 4.8kgs
with the longreef have a look at the volume there is to work with
bottom pic is before glassing, the board is sailing at 6.00kgs with strap's and so far 34. something GPS

Good option Keef, another 1st timer option (slightly more adventageous) that gives you more shaping practice is to buy a styrofoam surfboard blank(same as blue foam but thicker and white) - hotwire - shape - glass. I made on of these 3 boards ago and will use this for speed boards as there will be even less difference in weight on a 60L board. I think the blank was 2500 x 600 x 150. Not sure if you can still get them in white but here is a similar spec dow styrofoam, the blue foam just has the addition of a fire retandant:

www.dupont.com/building.html

So a density of 28kg/m^3 makes a 100L blank 2.8 kg! No need to sandwich!
