Back in Nov, member Curac put forward a thread on what you all wanted to achieve this (last) Summer.
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=43290
Plenty of us put up our windsurfing desires and so now its almost Winter its time to fess up......did ya get the job done
My carve 360's...tried but failed to get right through
Vulcan........nope
Board building project.....yep finished the 'black death' a butchered bic adagio and got a pb 32.8 on it at Burrum.
So thats a 1/3......failure for me lucky there's another summer coming
How did you all go??
I tacked my waveboard:
gpsteamchallenge.com.au/sailor_session/show?date=2008-12-15&team=12
And grew enough gonads to do two loop attempts...
Didn't get round though. Maybe next season
P.S. Great thread btw
1) Mine was to beat Sailpilot and,
2) it was to be able to tell my wife I was going sailing, rather than asking if I could.
One out of two ain't bad.................
Went out a lot more and got hooked again.
Became a Seabreeze member and got hooked on that too.
Discovered the joys of Safety Bay
Still can't gybe but I'm getting closer.
Bought extra gear and got both my kids sailing, hoped to get my son using the harness but that will have to wait for next summer.
My daughter is still working on getting back to the start point without walking back up the beach.
The main thing is they're still keen and looking forward to next summer.
7 / 10
Having fun not hurting myself (to much).....Done, Done one hell of a lot
Other than that,
Staying dry when I gybe..... Getting better
40kn on the dial..... Yep
36kn Nm..... Still dreaming of the day
Had a ball last season
I've only had a couple of decent sessions since that thread! The summer was pretty tame here..
Tidying up my top and bottom turns - bottom ones mostly.. Got better, need to carry more speed back up to the top again, and engage still more of the rail at the bottom
Jibes on my little gear (kinda related to the bottom turns I guess!) Yep, got around dry on a couple - none that were close to planing though
and planning to get stuck into loops (okay cheese rolls to start with) this season..Do tweaked out tabletops count? Or only if you land without breaking a boom with your head?
I'd say no - the season was a miserable failure for me. I'm holding out for some winter fronts, and hopefully a decent windy spring.
Missed that thread..probably before I found seabreeze. My goals were to get back to how i used t be able to sail.
Be able to plane through my gybes again ( forget duck gybes for the moment ..1st things 1st)
do decent jumps..
& be fit enough to get in & go for it!
Gybes.. occasional flash of brilliance feels good! but Im leaning back on exit & slowing it ..I know what to do just a matter of going for it..maybe if I try the extend the front arm trick it might do the job.Been easier since I got a floatier board but thats cheating..
jumps occasional one that feels Ok..Biggest problem is lack of fitness..I get in the air & too stuffed to pull the feet upwind & hang off properly..
fitness getting there..bit difficult when you cant get out often..still considering Ive been an invalid for the last 5 years & never thought Id sail again Im glad to just be able to get out there and do it!
Hopefully there will be some wind this summer so I can go sailing. I'd like to use my smaller board more, do screaming broad reaches and go for carve gybes .
Buggered my back at work half way through summer so didn't get out all that much. Did do a bit of sailing before then and used the small board sometimes and made a few gybes.
I reckon it is so important to have goals and keep pushing your Windsurfing forward, I've Windsurfed for years and nearly gave it up through boredom back in 2002- wasn't in a wave location and was seriously stuck in a rut going out doing the same old.....but then I tried a few tricks, started crashing loads and of course started loving it again!
While there's no wind I'm going to stick my head in my new Tricktionary book, watch some windsurf videos, stay excited about Windsurfing and work out some new goals!!
I did learn how to tack shortboard, and helitack.
But didn't really accomplish other freestyle goals => forward loop + vulcans, cause I started getting into waves so was at the beach getting crunched by the shorey instead of practising freestyle haha.
well my goal was to walk in particular un and down step let alone sail after doing the knee.
However the doc let me off the chain. So i've been:
wavesailing in mast high lumps all over the coast
cracked over 32knots
tacking a 67cm board 90% of the time
even started surfing again!!!
These were mine:
-Sailing coastal locations instead of the river DONE, few times in 2ft stuff
- WaterstartsDone, but only get them in like 20kn
- Gybes Occasionally. Can turn quickly now. Even came out switchfoot very slowly once.
- Bump Jumping ONCE. Not enough 2ft and 20kn combinations. Either 10kn or 20+ with 6ft+ crazy east coast low
- Maybe beginner mush wave riding Initiated. very light wind 1ft play arounds
Confident enough with the first 2.
Plenty of work to get the gybe (feet plus rig end bit)
B'n'J - can't wait till get conditions now
Beginner mush wave riding - will get there with time and plenty of correct conditions MAYBE!
What about you other Seabreezers?
My biggest goal this past summer was to get vulcans. After trying them here and there for a few years I just bit the bullet and did as many as I could every session, didn't take too long to fall into place Still can only do them on one tack though.
Tried a few flakas - fail. Tried a few shakas - mega fail. They are my two goals for next summer/any sails I get in winter, as well as vulcans on the other tack. Don't see it happening anytime soon though, can't really wrap my head the flaka and shaka.
One of my dodgy early vulcans
1.Lost 10kg,s get planing earlier and can use the RRD 84L wave cult (bought in Sydney at xmas time) when its 20knts - it's made a ** load of difference to sailing and the fitness improves with it - can sail as long as most of these young whipper snappers now
2. Sailed a lot and getting more short board tacks and a few duckies (summer only as too cold to fall in during winter)
3. Put some of Cribbies Gibing ideas into action and planing out of gibes a little more often - and the tips wiork really well for wave face gybes as well - gotta love the speed out of them
4. Got my wife and kids into sailing the Funster and they love it
failed miserably
1. - still a kook at jumping on r) foot forward (?starboard tack / Adelaide northerlies - but can do some spectacular dismounts trying)
2. Having good wind and waves on the same day for a wave sailing club event - but the events were great fun!
3. Getting away somewhere remote with good wind waves and a few mates -have a sail drink and sit by the fire and crap on about the day
CJW - you've set the standard for next summer
yes i did break my goal of 35 knots 2 sec and ended up doing a 36.5 and hope to do 37 next
did it on Carbon Art SP 44 with North Warp f2006 5.0 and Tmv7 speed 22cm.
p.s....and im only 15 this year !
Mine was to
Get off my 160 ltr and get something smaller; Yep
downwind carving; yep
tacking;yep
chop hop; yep
waterstart; yep
helitack; yep ish
jumps; yep ish
catapult; im a champion at this move
carve jibe; sort off ish
trying to find ways of letting my missus go more often; nope
trying to bribe my missus; nope
this years wish list
new board and sails
a go on some waves
carve jibe
pivot jibe
vulcun
get my missus into windsurfing
As for the wife, i now whare your comming from.
Carve gybe consistantly in chop on small gear. Getting good at timing entry so wave assists rather than hinders. Semi-pass.
Winning the race against the yachts and Skandia on a huge square course on my formula board. I win if the wind is strong and consistant or if not I lose badly. One time I came in 2 hours after sunset; 10knots, off shore 4kms (scary stuff). ALso planing downwind in chop is hairy as hell! Passes and fails.
Get out in my biggest wind and survive. 60knot peak (average 45knots)on a Sunday about a month ago on my 5.3m. Survival sailing mostly but made it. Broke mast and boom coming in, in shore break. Pass.
Avoid breaking equipment every month. Fail and broke.
Enjoyed myself immensely. Mega pass!
