This has got to be the ultimate dumb equipment mistake.

How do you break a mast into 4 pieces and a blackberry at the same time!

Transporting the mast home by train I was coming up the escalator at Town Hall Station. Had the mast standing on it's end beside me. I was in a bit of a day dream when all of a sudden bang. Sounded like two gun shots, people ducked for cover.

The mast was got wedged between an upcoming ceiling and the escalator step, the escalator won. Mast bag disintegrated with a piece of mast poking out. I had an immediate pain in my leg, I looked down to find a large red welt from the impact, it was lucky I wasn't impaled. [}:)]
Got home running late for an appointment I grabbed the Blackberry out of my pocket, guess what, it was thrashed, it got the hit. The welt was the exact shape of the blackberry. Saved by the phone!

LMFAO that is exactly the same thing that I thought

Were you coming up from the bottom level escalator (the one that puts you on the level for circular quay)?
That has to be the longest elevator in the southern hemisphere, no wonder you were day dreaming!

Hey I would have thought that this would be a great testimonial for Blackberry. Leg saved by Blackberry! I'm sure they'd want to give me another one, I'd even give them full rights the leg shots.!

Sam, what about the mast, surely NP 95% carbon should have handled it? I suppose you won't be interested in that mast as a trade in now?

After a crackin sail, a cold beer, reading that story topped it off a well- can't stop laughing!

I'm gonna have that escalator picture in my mind all night - everyone hitting the floor - what a crack up!

P.s sorry about your mast and phone!

Yeah, I was thinking about that. The family jewels were awfuly close to the point of impact.
Man that was so loud, my ears were ringing for the next ten minutes. I'll have to watch the news for reports of gun shot fire at Town Hall station.

The funniest / tragic thing was... I was picking up the mast from my brothers place so I could trade it in on a new piece of gear.

I'm hoping that this is my run of bad luck over in one day. Had to use my gf's PC cause mine died earlier on during the first attempt at putting the post up, bizzare.

Bad luck Des though its fortunate you didn't suffer serious injury. Did this happen at a busy time at the station?

It feels great to reach the 'top of the game' in one aspect of the sport! I think I may retire now and move on to other challenges.

What about the complete tosser behind you who said nothing and then turned to his mate and said watch this

Being from the Elmo club I sympathise with you, my seemingly better 1/2 when reading this said that's what I would do given the chance, especially on the way to trade-in for the new one

Des,

Just be grateful you had a Blackberry in your pocket, any other phone would have been destroyed.

Great story

Am I the only wondering just what you were doing with a mast in the city in the first place Des? Had you and your mast gone shopping together or had you been for a day out at Taronga Zoo? Man you really need to get a job again....

I may need to get a job so I can buy a new mast.
I live in the CBD (yes weird I know). The mast was in my brothers garage, he works at central, he brought it in for me to pick up. Probably should have walked it home!

But I think my luck is turning, a friend has offered to fix my phone, my PC came back to life this AM after a lot of diagnostics......leg is still sore though.
Off to botany now for the Slalom Nats, hope there's some wind!
