Anyone been to Fiji for a family/windsurfing holiday? Can you give me some advice about:
- whether I'd need to bring my own gear
- where to stay that's good for windsurfing AND is family friendly?

We've got two kids - 23 months and 1 month - and looking at going in July/August for a couple of weeks.

I've look at the Safari Lodge website, which seems to have a good range of gear, but doesn't look that family friendly. And it looks like there's nothing to do for non-windsurfers. Happy to be told otherwise though!

what are the winds like in fiji that time of the year? I'm tossing up between maui, fiji or maybe vietnam. I think maui is a frontrunner at the moment, looks like better winds.

Safari Lodge would be great.
Warren (The owner) has a 5 yr old as well, so it's already set up for kids.
Also, Nananu-I-Ra is a small island, no chance they can escape.
I'd highly recommend it.

We have a family coming in our group. with a 2.5yo and 12mth(now). it is second trip for them the first being when the older one was about 1.

They love the safe water environment for the kids and the great help the staff give.
PM me for further details. we go the last 2 weeks every August.

Its not a resort style destination with a kiddy pool and Creche
...... but the staff will dote over your children - its a much more intimate holiday - With wind and gear!

I think he might have been referring.... to some suggestion....

that someone has.... used these topics for advertising and had....

a particular way of writing....

paradise awaits....

On another note, I must be the worst person for wind. When I went to Fiji for 3 weeks a couple of years back there was next to no wind, and I went back the following year for a single week, and there was lucky to be a day or two.

I did enjoy the lack of communication though and read enough books in a hammock, and ate some great food. A good holiday in that respect.

Because we both use a hyphen?? You are - literally - reading too much into these little characters.

Just for the record, the first that I realised one of the posters here did trips to Fiji was in the reply to my PM to him. Doesn't get more appropriate I reckon.

Nice picture of Troll Spray though.

I figured you were just joking about someone else thinking this was Wazza. I still can't tell if you are or joking or if you think he is.

Either way, fair reports on what its like over there in Fiji are always good. I myself might try Cocos next, so its a warning on the weather for anyone else.

TristanF, take this all with a grain of salt.

Maybe I should market holidays for windy locations where I am not?

Okay, you got me there Craig! I must admit that it was windy that day, and I was there. Somehow I missed out on sailing that day though... (lucky for me)

It was a bit intimidating to turn up on your first day and have 50knots(?) plus thrown at you, and I think I might have been overpowered if I tried my smallest sail, a 5.4m.

My partner and I went to Safari Lodge for ten days this Feb and had a great time - and she reckoned it was the most relaxing holiday that she has ever had. Apart from windsurfing we snorkelled, water- skied/wakeboarded (not well)/skurfed, and lazed about reading and eating etc. Even in Feb which isn't supposed to be that windy we got pretty lucky with the wind and had at least five of the days over 20 knots.

We don't have ankle-biters but I think it would be a pretty good family friendly place.

What a coincidence - I know heaps of 38 year olds who are 38 too. Oops used a hyphen - we must be the Holy trinity.

I just don't get it Verne - What's your point (apart from maybe someone giving their home country or, god forbid, their resort a plug)? First TristanF (OP - I assume "original Poster"???) and Davmen are one and the same, then TristanF and Warren Francis are the same. With your superior powers of deduction, next you'll tell me everyone who has windsurfing as their sport in their SB profile is actually one person.

PS - Don't even know why I'm giving this the time it doesn't deserve either

PPS - Would love to holiday in Fiji with family one day too.

a member just emailed me this from another forum, more similarities and coincidences no doubt, you be the judge. hint; sausage has used PS and PPS as warren has on that forum...

PS - I think the mixed reviews are a result of an incident a few years ago when a magazine was invited to do a kitesurfing photo shoot - there are always 2 sides to every story and having been there I would ignore the whole thing!
PPS - there's an interesting blog of a person learning to kitesurf at Safari at http://tracytanguay.blogspot.com/ (scroll down about halfway), the kitesurfing instructors also teach windsurfing

Yeah, sorry mate, the KA sails could get me so far, but the lack of Carbon Art boards and no Darth Vader mask would see me turned around at the border

I'll say one thing about Fiji, at least you can relax in warm weather in a hammock, unlike Sandy Point where you can 'relax' stuck around a heater trying to get life back into you. If forgot how 'cool' it can be until I noticed everyone in Jodi's photos are wearing these black neoprene things.
