Hi, fellas Flipper here again, umm I would like to know Do Weed fins really hold up better if you hit a sand bar at full speed On the weekend I was windsurfing the Pit. While I was on a speed run, I hit a sand bay and my 30 cm freeride fin that I just brought back from Wa, ripped off like paper. This is my second time in a row breaking the same type of fin, so I am very good at it.. I bent my boom as well and bent me mast, so it was a good crash windsurfing is just like having a girl friend, it takes all your money So I dont know what to do I am getting really ticked off breaking so many fins And all the fins here in melbourne are 250 dollars, there not cheap wich makes me feel even worse
Kato did not tell me where the sand bar was hiding
I was windsurfing where this other dude is in the pic
Flipper should stop talking about himself in the third person (unless there really are lots of personalities trapped in there)
but, yes, weed fins break less when you get too close to a sandbar, as they tend to scrape instead of break.
Yes Weed fins are more resilient to impact than a pointer which with a vertical face tends to catch on whatever you hit drag through, whereas a weed fin tends to bounce upwards.
May still have some cleaning up to do of the fin but generally it won't be to bad.
Go the Weedy you know you want to
G10 weedies are the shizzle.
If you somehow manage to break one of those, then...
...um no I really can't see how you'd manage to do it!
Well there was still abit of the fin base stuck in the board and I lost the fin. Did not bother to even look for it. The mast is jammed up and bent. It must of been on the point of breaking. Lucky it was a 40% carbon mast, any higher carbon content and it would of broken. That's one good thing about having a cheap mast, at least they flex a little more in wipe outs. The boom is a Neil pryde 3x, I cant believe it did not break, cause every one has broken one of thease booms. It is bent a little, but I think it should be still safe to use. I dont know why my sail is still in one piece, but any way it held up nice, cause when I catapalted I put my knee through it real hard. But I think the x ply saved the sail. So I then did the walk of shame back It was my first time on me windsurfer since getting back from Wa as well
I sail in a bay where the weed can be an issue and have been using the weedie for about 12 months. Not sure if they are any stronger when you hit something but the board handles better than when I had a conventional fin on. I'd try the weedie because I don't think the handling would be compromised that much.
By the way, I once thought I was in the channel at Wello and wasn't. Ended up in about a foot of water on rocks. That was fun.
I'd rather break a fin than break my body.. tales of having to have shoulder ops after a disagreement with a sandbar + months of no sailing..
G10 to the rescue!
I've done that to a couple of my fins, bit of bog and you're back up and running again.
Try hitting the same rock with a carbon fin and you'll know about it.
