I wish I had my first attempts in the surf,,
I was 15 and in the lake :-) don't think mine were any better either..
Excellent work, you're nearly there.
Watching this I started to feel the pain in my back from my attempts a few years ago.
I know how he feels,
Had my first few goes at a forward the other day.
U line the wave up run through all the things in your head ,
then comes the jump aand flop. faceplant the sail.
But i tried it again and wont give up till i can do it!
THats the way Mav.
I'm gonna do ten each each time i sail. No matter what. Then once I got them out the way I can enjoy my sail.
I'm gonna find more than three foot of water tho.
yeah very cheeserollish - not to take anything away from him going for them!
Mav - best thing you can do is really commit to cranking in that back hand and holding on tight!! the WORSE thing to do is let go halfway - even if you get ripped out of the straps - you wont hurt yourself more than a littel backslap.
Also by really cranking in the sail rather than throwing yourself over the top, you get more of a forward and less cheeseroll...they look better :)
Good luck!!!!!!
yeah push forward with the front hand, but for me i also found that if you have your back hnd right back on the boom, when you crank it right to your chest, it pushes your front hand forward and opens up more of the sail to the wind.
in the ones in the vid - he is throwing himself around the mast rather than setting the sail to whip him around. All the sheet in/push forward/tuck up motion does is gets the sail in the place to do all the work - then you jsut need to hang on, look back and spot the landing :)
Once you learn them, you dont really need steep ramps to go for it, but i found that a small steep wave/ramp was best to learn as i didnt need to concentrate really hard on the jump itself and more on cranking it. All you need is enough to get out the fin though so dont use the old - "that ramp wasnt right - ill wait for the next one" trick - just go for it!!!! I found that once i had managed to learn to hang on and go with the forward motion, the fear went away (mostlly anyway hehe) and was replaced with a "SH%T YEAH!!!"feeling :)
also make sure someone is either behind you or coming towards you so they believe you over beers later :)
Great footage!!!
Very gutsy attempts at a Cheese Roll - self preservation went out the window!
Every initiation is upwind (as opposed to downwind for a forward), but by dropping the sail, you take out the power in the sail making it easier to rotate, but in a more unusual rotation.
10/10 for effort.
