When I first saw this sail on the water I thought some guy had fished out an old school sail for the fun of it. Then I realised this is a 2010 model sail, imo the ugliest sail I've laid eyes on in recent memory
These sails are wicked, no nonsense fun.. Just because its not designed by a German with a PHD in aesthetic graphic vectors..
Although I agree the Superfreak is horrid.
Around 1992 I had a set of Hot Sail Maui sails - they were the first monofilm sails I had.
The monofilm was in a grid. Effectively lots of squares of monofilm taped together, so if you ripped it you could replace a panel (although I am sure that wasn't the design intent of having the grid).
Those sails combined with a custom Island Unique 8'2" squash tail board was a very nice set up.
They pissed on the combat waves and Ezzy waves at the time so much more stable.
Gaastra had a sail with bits of material forming crocodile teeth down the leech which were close to the Hot Sails in stability (and they looked different) but they acheived stability with long booms.
I don't think HSM have changed their graphic design since then. Few more years I guess it will be back in fashion.
I disagree, I think it looks great, I could also probaly safely say its bullet proof!
I love Superfreaks and the other sails that the HSM team come up with, Bolts and Smacks etc, just have never got around to getting one.
This is a company that is offering something different, you can even design your own superfreak if you like..
Saw the latest edition of windsurf magazine which shows the gps model. Bright, very bright. Kind of looks like the np colour of the eighties.
^^^ Speedfreak?
Looks like a 2001 Neil Pryde batwing leech (Zone and Core ring a bell?) with a 2011 Neil Pryde boom cutout
I must say that I was very impressed by a mates superfreak the last time I sailed it. Very soft feeling. I'm surprised that more sail makers are not going down the dacron road. Great graphics, can leave them in the sun, walk on them, take battens out and fold them in a suitcase etc, only issue is small lost of visability, that said how much can you really see through a one year old wave x ply sail?
I bought a 5.8 Superfreak last year, and I have to say it's the best sail I have ever owned, I just love it. It's wind range is phenominal to say the least and it can take big gusts very comfortably.
It's also semi-battened which makes it light as a feather to flick when gybing. Plus being all black it looks pretty damn cool as well
my new 5.8 superfreak just arrived a couple days ago.. red and white..looks really cool.
cant wait to try it out!
and, agree with laff77..
the ones i have used.. really like the way they feel and handle.
Does anyone sell them in Oz?? I like the description of the super freak but would like to sail one first, if in the event they dont sell them here just checked the site and the cost of one is exceptionally good compared to normal costs associated with the bigger sail brands.
