Got my new 2010 Isonic 101 and it looks great untill i try and put a fin in it.

The front fin bolt hole is to far back. Its at least half a hole out, if not more.

Anyone else had this problem? I guess I could file it out but its a new board and I don't think I should have to hack into it with a file to make the fin fit. I have tried 3 different fins and they are all the same.

The picture is with a Techtonics Talon fitted that has a white base. The bolt hole can just be seen at the left of the hole in the board.

Not impressed

There was a whole batch of tabou freestyle 90s in 2009 with the footstrap double plugs in sideways. The back strap wouldnt even fit, we had to run the back strap with offset and only one screw it was a nightmare. Eventually tabou sent us customised footstraps with extra holes drilled in, but they kept breaking because there were to many holes!.

The poor kids in the cobra factory must be permanently stoned on epoxy fumes, hopefully they didnt get fired over it.

Its a bummer but theres probably nothing that can be done about it except give the importers a heads up, and drill the hole in the board yourself.

First off, I'd be trying warranty, especially if you try other fins and they're all the same.
But by the looks, it's safe to elongate the hole.

That's what I love about tuttle, seems standard measurements are a bit optional, with both board makers, box makers and fin makers. The chance of getting any one fin to fit perfectly in any given box is not good. There's usually some filing or packing to be done somewhere.

Grumpy,
At least your fins fitted into the box without having to seriously sand 'em down......or did you have to do that as well. Filing it should not pose any problems and I have noticed my bolt holes aren't a perfect match either.

Catch you out on the water with the new toy soon.

Gee I havnt seen that in any starboards that ive owned only maybe 1-2mm out.
I seen a lot worse than that before though.
filing it out wont harm the board but yer not something you want to do to a new board.

I have ISonics and have sailed sonics for a number of years. Never had a problem. If the supplied fin - (Drake) fits then all my other fins Tectonics, Select, Vector etc, have fitted ok, apart from the usual sanding to make a snug fit(never get Tuttles to be consistent across brands).
Could be the Tectonic fin. Has this been tried in another board?
Also take it to the shop and try it in another Starboard - the boxes should be standard. If it fits ok then it is your board if not its your fin. I have occasionaly had a fin such as a leading edge fin that required me to slightly enlarge the hole but only slightly, I would not be happy with the discrepency you have(if it is the board) and don't see why you should have to start butchering a new board, odds are though I think it is the fin.

Ian1,

I posted a similar thread a few weeks back. Exact same problem! Out by about the same amount shown in your pic. However, my board was a 2009 Futura. I lengthened the hole with a round file until the holes lined up. I don't blame you for not wanting to do this however with a brand new board, nor should have have to!

Hi Ian1,

Definately a strange one.

If you can try a different fin to ensure that it is the board that is out and not the Fin.

If the holes are still out take it back to your place of purchase and we will get things sorted for you straight away.

Feel free to email me also if you have any questions at

I have tried techtonic, select and a drake fins. Whilst they do vary slightly none of them will fit the holes. The fins I tried are currently in use with other boards.

Its not quite as easy as taking it back to the place I bought it. There are no shops here. The dealer I bought it from is about 700kms away. I have been in contact with them today and sent them the details.

I appreciate auswind showing interest in this problem. I will email details of the dealer I bought it through and hopfully we can come up with a solution.

Fingers crossed.

I allways thought that the fin box was an insert and something that Cobra and other manufacturers would source as a standard component?

I'll swap you for my 09 Isonic, all the fins fit perfectrly!

Yeah, but some clown has to drill the holes in the Cobra factory.
