I've seen a few queries and heard various conflicting information about this event so have made a call to the organisers to flesh out some of the details missing from the on-line info. Here's a short summary which will hopefully encourage more first timers (like me) to turn up:

1. Event starts when the wind is up on Sat pm 12th Jan at Ledge point.
2. You can register on the day from 9.30 ish on the beach at Ledge.
3. Briefing is at 1 pm.
4. If you don't have sail numbers they will allocate you one on the day but you will need some black tape to put it on the sail.
5. Life jackets (type 1 or 2) and 2 orange smoke flares are required. A type 2 jacket is a like a typical dinghy sailing jacket. These are supposed to be available on the day ($15 rent for flares), not sure about cost for life jackets. Don't know how many are availale though. You can buy individual flares from Whitworths (Mosman park - stirling highway and leederville) for $15 ea - presumably similar cost elsewhere.
6. Course is approx 25 km via a number of inner and outer buoys (5 or 7) finishing through South Passage at the beach in front of the Tavern. Straight line distance Ledge to Lancelin is 12km.
7. There will be a number of safety boats around the course and pick up vehicles driving along the beach.
8. Local waters written forecast from the met office looks very good and pretty stable given the synoptic chart, temperature etc 18-23 knts SW and swell around 1.5m.
9. There is no organised transport from Lancelin to Ledge but getting a lift is unlikley to be a problem.
10. This is a Guinness book of records attempt so chance to be famous !!
11. Website is at www.oceanclassic.org.

See you there !

What a great event it is every year.

Even if not competing come along and check it out, it is a real spectacle and the party is always good value.

Check out the helicopter footage of the event last year.

Here is the course as sailed in 2007. Should be much the same in 2008 and the distance is just on 20km.

spent three weeks in WA in November with no wind... I am close to crying.

Have fun! Looks like there will be plenty of wind and swell your way over the next couple of weeks.
