guy i have a ( think it called ) "variotop"

the mast i have doesn't have a hole on the top so i have taken off the clip

1. is there a better way of holding the sail on it .
only been using tape.

2.where should i place the base plate ?
i find even when i am leaning the sail all the way forward it stilling STALLING in the wind ( going too much into wind)
- should i move it all the way forward , and test it .... ?
is there general rule , i thought you only push it forward with larger sail

3. when i am dropping the sail the mast pin it coming out and disconnect a lot
does it need to be replace ? New loop?
i have just loop the end of the down haul rope around the rubber bit

4. on the base plate , where the rubber U join , there are 3 bit of rope
are they suppose to be tight so the u join is harder to move, or softer

sorry for the bad English - please let me know the correct name so i can learn them

Bugger, my masts have a hole in the top for the pin. I'm pretty sure when I bought that sail it came with a couple of different caps, including one that caps the top without a pin. I'll have a look in my box of bits and pieces and see if I can find one. If I do I'll get to you.

Test your mast base position. Forward, back and the middle. There are a lot of variables.

It sounds like your mast base is a bit dodgy.

William,

1. What's in the top of the mast? is it a plug or somthing else that could be removed or drilled into to allow the the clip/plug to fit in the end. The other thing you could do is just get some more webbing and sew it around to make a cap that the mast tip will fit into and hold in place.

2. Just try smack in the middle of the track first up, Then move it back slowly till you find the right spot for you. From memory(I lernt on a viper too) I just stuck it in the middle for the whole time, It's a long board so if anything it will need to be moved back from centre. Until you are planning in the straps it won't matter all that much, Just stick with the middle. Come to think of it I never got in the straps on the viper, It wasn't until i got my next board that i even needed straps.

3. If you mast base and extension are coming apart then it's probably worn out, The rope won't be good in higher winds....Even dangerous for you and other sailors. Get this replace ASAP. It could be the base or the extension, See if you can try someone elses and see which one is faulty. You could also try some WD-40 around the push button on the extension to see if it's seized up a bit, This happened once to myself...Could be an easy fix.

4.The rope on the mast base won't be real tight as it needs to let the tendon flex, The rope needs to be in good condition though as it becomes your life line if the tendon happens to break.

Keep asking the questions as it's the best way to learn, See you on the water one day.

Jase.

I would go to your local windsurf shop and see what they have got to help;
a) Depending on the mast manufacturer, you should be able to get a new mast tip insert with a recessed hole in it, or
b) get a plastic mast cup end cap to fit on the strap and go over the end of the mast, or
c) Other than that you could take the sail to a sailmakers to add a webbing cup on the vario top strap to fit over the end of the mast.

BillyBoy received the Sailworks cap for his sail on Sunday. It fitted his mast fine. We worked on rigging his sail a bit better, lowering the tophaul so the tack of the sail is close to the mast base. Also showed how the sail is primarily rigged on downhaul.

It was an oversight on my part. I did not even think about his mast needing a cap.

We agreed the connection between the pin and the extentsion is loose and disconnects too easily.
