Great post - never tire of watching these sequences. Man he rips and geez if only I had an ounce of his sailing ability.

Still love watching him do those open ocean speed runs - there's a big get off at the beginning (2.50min) where he trips a rail after a nasty bit of chop. Also that's one heavy duty knee brace he's wearing in The Lanes sequence (i think).

Geez Barn, your a hard marker for a movie that is probably around 15 years old.

I know I saw it when it first came out, just can't remember when that was. Guessing around 95 maybe???

Use to love those 90s videos where they talked so much rubbish. - fly hard in to the face of the danger zone.

Hahah just countering the Hero Worship with some destructive criticism.. Others would call it blasphemy..

I'm not alone in noticing his forwards.. It's probably just the style has changed, horizontal spin is has respect.. You don't see any pros do polevaults anymore..

There is a Robert Teriitehau stalled forward in the vid that looks a bit more modern.. His axis is more appropriate for doubles..

I doubt it's any later than 95? I'm sure someone will know..

Cripes that guy must be fit! The bit where he holds the sail by the base and surfs waves like a surfboard is amazing.

He was the master. We're stuck in the 'glory days' if people still think the sailing in R.I.P. is cutting edge..

People do realise that there are generations of windsurfers who don't worship this guy?. His forwards are polevaults, he doesn't even spot his landings, just tucks his chin into his chest and sheets in.. Not that that's boring, I'm partial to the old poley vaulty myself.. They're fun, but not textbook, or skillful.

I'll probably get suspended again for talking smack about Robby (Sailboading Jesus)..

(I should warn any new lurkers that everybody knows not to take anything I say seriously, I'm genuinely worried this blasphemy will get someone really upset.. )

I assume he did his "pole-vault forwards" while you where probably still pi***ng your nappies. Did you also notice the off-the-lip table tops, forwards and 360s? Did you see the 20 kg boards he was using to do this? How about the footage of Jaws and backyards?

Do the same or better style of sailing on that type of gear and you can call yourself a hero.

BTW, no one said it was cutting edge... it's a classic pre-digital age video featuring someone that has done more for the popularity of windsurfing than any other person out there.

God? Nope ... a legend! You bet!

(Is this the first time you've gotten Green Thumbs steg? Congrats!)

That's pretty much it, I was pissing in my nappy when Robby was at the top of his game.. This doesn't mean I'm not allowed to point out his poley vaulties..

I also think Josh Stones spocks were pants.. He invented the move, but they were still pants.. (I'd maybe stopped pissing my pants by then)

Reckon if I had his gear, with his amount of time on the water, I along with 90% of the rest of us could be as good as Naish..

I'll never forget the day I was sailing at Kanaha on a trip to Maui in 2006. Nobby Raish was there testing some sort of prototype speed board. Solid wind and up to 1 metre wind chop.

Decide to watch the "master" from the main beach with fellow traveller, Chris from Wind, Surf n Snow. Nobby was sailing about 200m upwind from the main beach, hits a smallish wave and gets a 5-6m jump. I quickly told Chris to look at the jump and he's says, "what, the kiteboarder?"

Amazing. Just as amazing as RIP.

A story? I've seen Ian Mouro Lemos plane out of a double forward off a knee high wave on freestyle gear.. That was impressive.

I guess having not grown up with Naish Mania, and having experienced the talent of the current Pros I am having difficulty appreciating why I'm not allowed to point out his archaic forwards.. To me he was just the 1st guy on the scene, got the sponsors and rode the wave that was the rise of windsurfing, and did very well for himself... (The wave broke when Robby et al. decided the general public needed speed boards)

Why didn't Robby invent freestyle in 1992? All he had to do was say, "Ohh I've sailed Hookipa a fair bit this week, think I'll go see what tricks I can invent on flat water.. There's gotta be something cooler than a body drag, maybe inspire people without access to waves?"
