Second go at video editing. Had some problems with the original file being too large for Sony Vegas (>2gb) and had to edit in Quicktime which converted file to .mov which Vegas then wouldn't play (black screen). Converted .mov to .avi but lost some resolution in the process. Finally found how to speed up / slow down footage so played around at beginning and end.
Took Scope's advice and shot this in R4 mode on the GoPro - definately picks up more for boom shots etc as compared to my first movie which was R2 mode.
Actually enjoying the challenge of video editing but results are still very amateurish. Anyway enjoy (there's a lot of puffing and panting because I'm so unfit ).
nice. i wouldn't worry too much about your puffing...all these videos showing sailors reveal their 'game faces'.
can i request no-one straps a gopro onto a helmet and ventures into the bedroom? that right there would be oversharing...
Great video sausage, really enjoyed it. Good speed through the chop & swell considering the conditions - enjoyable session by the looks of it.
Looking forward to getting a GoPro HD for Christmas. Great video and looks like a top spot to sail too.
What resolution is the R4 mode? What sort lighting conditions were you filming in? I've seen the Gopro videos on the GoPro website and they look crystal clear. Is the quality going down a lot getting onto utube?
Thanks for your comments guys.
Great stuff Snags, sense of speed looks good
Original files shouldn't be too large unless your vegas is old or it's XP or whatever (?), my cheap Videostudio accepts no matter how big, maybe someone cluier than us can advise. Your right it's best not to encode file too often.
Thanks for that. I've got a MacBook Pro and I'll try iMovie or whatever it is on that. I'm looking forward to the video editing side of things as I don't really know much about this but looking forward to trying some ideas.
love the sound track - goes well with the video - I was up there at emu park in April & got a lot of sailing in - is the water always brown? if you went out to great kepple you could get clear water white sand vids?
Enjoyable video Brian, well done. Very addictive this video editing eh? but also v time consuming. That 'quick hour sail' turns into 4 hours by the time, you've up loaded your results to GPSTC, and edited some footage to show the troops plus another couple of hours uploading to You Tube etc.Great fun though.
The clarity of videos improves dramatically once you decide to be ruthless about editing out the unclear footage I have found which i definitely did not do early on.
RainX on the lens helps the water to run off the lens instead of spotting. Not perfect but does help. Might be called something different in Aus.
The antifog strips are a must have.
Bright sunlight and bright colours also help clarity which is what you see a lot in the Gopro.com vids and all the dodgy footage is edited out of course.
Definition wise:
R1 is standard definition(never use it)
R2 is 720p at 30fps(never use it)
R3 is 720p at 60fps(the brightest and clearest setting I reckon)
Hey Mobydisc, iMovie loves the HD files, very smooth editing, but does not handle 60fps footage. Final Cut Pro does though)
R4 960p and has the biggest field of view
R5 is full 1080p but the field of view is only 127 degrees instead of 170 degrees(never use it)
Which one you use maybe dependant on your computer processing ability to handle HD files. My Vaio is at its limit processing the R4 footage so its getting upgraded.
Keep em coming
Geez! Snags, you make it look painfull. Try and smile some more
Good to see I'm not the only one puffing and panting down the run. That chop really is hard work when you're trying to go fast.
Try and crash some more, that would make me feel better too.
Good stuff! great to see someone else puffing! I'll post the bit of me when I get it edited..I don't have the equipment so I'm relying on someone else.I'll leave the stacks in..The last one where I fall off the back as I exit the gybe & the board keeps going is funny....
Rather than start a new topic I'll chuck my first GoPro video in this thread.
Great work Moby although you need to edit out anyone overtaking you. I reckon this video stuff could get addictive.
Re: GoPro mounts. Yes make sure you have some sort of lanard as the first sail with camera the curved mount let go. Do yourself a favour and get yourself a Flymount as well - I haven't used my helmet again since using the Flymount.
PS - I don't know if dental floss would survive a big crash either but at least your camera won't get any gum disease
Great vid Moby.
With transitions, a mate a lot wiser than me with video says don't use them, but I do because ignorance is bliss and I only have to please one guy.
I use the GoPro mounts with no drama but I was anal with prepping the surface (old fella thing). If mounting to the side of your helmet, make sure it's plenty forward enough otherwise you'll film your eyebrow () because of the very wide camera angle. As for a leash, the wiser than he looks Choco put me onto using the trace wire or what ever they're called that your fish hook attaches to. Fit it under the latch and through a vent hole or around the boom as needed. As Snags said a Flymount is the ducks nuts for the boom and mast. When I have it on the mast just attach the leash to the Flymount.
It is an enjoyable process that a lot of non windsurfing family and friends just don't get
Here's a couple of photos how I used to mount camera before the Choco method, too fat and lazy after yesterday to take new photos but you'll get the gist
Thanks for the information everyone.
So a wire trace is the go? The dental floss is definitely not the go as I pulled it apart yesterday. I'll nip down to the tackle shop to check for some traces.
In relation to mounts I like the idea of a helmet mount over fixing it on the rig somewhere. I think the helmet mount shows as much as possible what the sailor sees. This I think makes the video more immersive. Yesterday I had nothing much to do so I watched the raw video footage of the sailing. It really felt like reliving the session, especially with the noise that the camera picks up, including some swearing when I came off.
Plus I don't really want to include myself in the video as I don't want to keep the video family friendly. My helmet doesn't have a full face visor.
I don't mind people overtaking me. I think it makes more interesting footage when sailing around others. I seem to have hit a wall at about 25 knots. Perhaps video could be a tool to improve my sailing and improve performance?
Following Firies advice I purchased a deep sea fishing rig from a well known department store that starts with the letter K. I wasn't too sure what to buy but there appeared to be lots of wire and latches inside the packet so I took the plunge.
Opening up the packet brought out three fishing rigs with a whole bunch of swivels, traces and latches. Out of this I butchered one rig to secure the GoPro to my helmet through the vent holes as seen below
.
That's the go Moby but no need to secure both sides
Look out Moby, I can see a girl in a window on the phone, might be ringing the police about a pervert with a camera
Second GoPro video
Very good Moby I like the different views, you looking around and it was put together great, just need a boom mount to get your scone in (it can't look worse than mine) I'm a bit lazy with my vids, I'll have to lift my game now
Yeh banging the camera when on top of the helmet is a problem but you'll soon learn to avoid it, although the side mount gets away from that alien look
And start a new thread with the next video
I use a skate board helmet and attached the mount on the front, this allows you to still rest the sail on your head without hitting the camera, the flymounts are choice allow for heaps of camera angles easy to attach and very secure.
this is the sort of angle you get;
