What boom is that?

On the Neilpryde (www.neilpryde.com) website the first thing you see there is a picture of Kauli Seadi on a wave. The boom in that picture appears to be a bit different to most and has an unusual extension setup.

Does anyone know what it is?

I looked at the Windshack website amongst others and it mentions a boom where the boom end moves down the extension instead of the extension moving. Is that what this is?

Has anyone used one? Is there a real advantage in the stiffness of that design?

its probaly one of the prototypes wich are comming out along with kaulies new sail, instead of having two pieces for the extention it has solid arms and an extend-able end piece, easier to make there for quicker to testout and quicker to get onto the real deal/prodution..

it couldnt be a final product for kauli especially with his freestyle and all his clewfirst, switch stance sailing, it would get to in the way, so it most probaly is just to see how the ergonomics goes with their best sailor.

hope that helps
thanks

You've got bloody good eyes to get any boom detail from that photo.
Is that Kauli or George Michael?

Surely thats just his harness line that you can see.
Its been cut off in the photoshop process, so it looks like two bits of tube.

Long harness lines and outhaul rope dangling. Nothing too different apart from 30+ inch harness lines.

No, it's not the harness lines that I'm looking at, but the rear end of the boom. it looks like two bars protrude way past the end of the clew.

I think Jordo must be right that it's a prototype boom.

I'm not trying to be disagreeable but I'm pretty sure that's a harness line you're looking at. If it isn't harness line then where is his harness line?

If you follow from where the harness line starts on the boom it is the same length and same curve as on the riders side. The shorter piece at the back is the floppy bit of rope you get when you've tied off your boom and .

They are pointing straight out like tubes in that direction because he is snapping pretty damn hard off the lip.

To have 2 bars going beyond the clew would just drag in the water when you bottom turn and not what you need particularly when you turn as hard as guys like Kauli, Josh and JP.

But you are being disagreeable Sam

Yeah, now that I look at it again and compare the length of the harness lines, you are right! I guess I am not used to seeing someone's harness lines that long, and pointing off in that direction.

Mine only point in that direction while I am still attached to them and flying off the board backwards!

Cheers.

Yeah, no worries. I was just being smart! I'd rather someone point out that I'm wrong than keep on going down the wrong track.

Thanks.

I think as someone said earlier it's just photoshop gone wrong. Look at the weird effects they have added.

Nup, not photoshop's fault....just a strange angle, I guess....see second image.

[edit] Looks a bit like a new type of adjustable boom, where the back of the boom (terminology?) slides inside the boom rails?!? I can only see one harness line too? It's hurting my eyes and my head now!!

This (less photoshopped) one looks like it might have been the original that was reflected, and further modified.. and it doesn't really look like harness lines in this pic.. the second 'line' seems to come from behind the sail, there's clearly no loop in the line (maybe it broke?) and there's no 'third' line that would support the outhaul line theory..

But, where is the harness line that should be on the top side???

maybe it is the outhaul?

Looks kinda dangerous. Perhaps they are sharpened blades for kite strings... but probably just the outhaul swinging.

Two outhaul ends? thicker than the harness line? Swinging parallel, and not in the same direction as the harness line is swinging? Seems a bit of a dodgy explanation to me!

Whatever it is, it curves nicely in line with the boom arms on both sides of the sail, which could suggest that it was carbon tube that passed right through the boom end.

I think Formula/Jord are onto something with the sliding boom end - it would make a true one piece carbon boom a possibility, should be stiff and strong, but wouldn't fit in the car well, and you'd get the spare tube stuck in the lip or face of the wave..

Still wondering where the other harness line has gone though??

Sorry conspiracy theorists, its just optical illusion and is definitely the harness line.

As you can see from this pic, the harness line is there, and so is the flapping outhaul (its all in the camera angle)

it's a np boom..the clear plastic front of the boom head gives it awayand just excess outhaul lines..as for the color black it must be grey since the orange panels turn a bit dark toobut wait a minute why on 555's pic is his calves and knees bluemust be some xperimental cream to keep them cool...

you guys must be really bored, it's a normal boom, prob carbon, you can just see his harness line and his outhaul rope that he hasn't fully tied off.

Nope its forward scanning passive sonar to protect his fin. He must have been sailing backwards when he broke it. He doesn't seem to need it anyway cos he's so used to that poppy slidy stuff he just turns on his rails. The blokes a genius even if he is gay.

Kauli....Keep trying li'l fella, you'll get the hang of it soon!
