Macroscien if you want increase your time on the water in all conditions and increase your skills & fitness I think youve got a couple of options in Qld. From what I understand there is no Formula racing in SEQ. Bayside run the slalom events, theres the longboard racing at PPSC and I think Bayside are going to begin some longboard courseracing this summer or theres RS:X up at Manly. Paradise Point Sailing Club are having a rest for a couple of weeks then racings on again. If you would like to give it a try there some spare raceboards around you can borrow. I think raceboards are a better option in the broadwater due to its relatively narrow with lots of sandbars, if you dont mind travelling to Manly try RS:X, one board one sail everyones on the same gear. I,m doing both and getting more time on the water getting fitter and loving it.

The footage of Nokia is classic. Auckland harbour, wind against tide is scary.
There is an amazing DVD of the Moth Worlds at Lake Macquaire this year.
World class fleet racing in 25knots. Definitely pushing the top end of the boats capabilities.
FW has a higher wind threshold at the moment. I think gear breakage and maintenance is probably the biggest difference between the classes.

^ Perhaps the guys racing on Sundays up at Paradise Point could tell us. They are on (usually)? non-planing race boards.

I can't imagine the moth in 25 knots.

Perhaps you want something like this:

Can anyone say how the JP Super Light Wind compares to a formula board? I tried a JP SLW at a JP demo day and quite liked it though the wind was quite strong.

What sail will be recommended for JP super light wind board ? If Formula is using same rigs ( mast, base and booms sails ) as ordinary windsurfing board?

Aah, if Auckland that reminds me RSX world championship I have been watching in Auckland few years ago, Fortunately they had much calmer conditions that skiffs had.

So how it compare now Formula vs RSX ?
Fortunatelly all windsurfing skills are universal. Here is RSX rider after hours that can prove that could ride small board too in 35+ kn ( my own video ) Takapuna, Auckland.

Hi Mobi
I have a SLWB and although I have not ridden a formula, I have been out with one. He was faster (nothing outstanding) than me although we had different sails on. He had 9m (I think) and I had a 7.5 (but I am about 25 kg lighter). He also planed a bit earlier than me. We were out in about 10-15 knots and 10-20cm chop. My excuse was I have only been windsurfing for just over 2 years (Vs 20 odd) so I am still only a beginner.

Hi Macro

I use a 7.5, 6.5 & a 5.5 ( that's all I have) & have used them all with the SLWB and have been planing. Obviously depending on the wind strength and as I recall I was in around 15 knots with the 5.5. I use the same rigging for my 130 Xite Ride and longboard. I am only 60kg so would say an 85kg person would need larger sails.

i watched video of Formula sailing posted by choco, awesome footage.

however lightweights holding up that sail size of what looks like 10 or 11 metre is not particularly fun.

the swing weight when gybing, you need to be strong.

i would get overpowered in 15 knots on that sailsize, would be faster for top-end on smaller size no doubt.

a 7.8m is a very good compromise between low-end power and lightweight /feel.

did try one of the new Neil Pryde race sails the 8.6m,was surprised it did not feel a monstrosity like other sails in this size.

I think the big difference between RSX and FW is power to weight ratio.
FW board is 8.5-9kgs, using an 11m sail on average, where an RSX is 19.5-20kgs with a 9.5m sail.

FW are terrible at slogging i.e wind below 5knots, where and RSX is racing in those conditions. When it gets windy I think an RSX and FW are similar in VMG downwind?

There are a few guys who use the RSX rig on a FW board and are very competitive around the race course. Luke Baillie from QLD did this at the FW nationals last year and was right up there.

That is a fair assessment, but not entirely accurate.
The RSX class in Australia has it's own class association that is part of Yachting Australia, and for good reason i.e all the big international RSX events are run by ISAF not the IWA.
The AWA were the original supporters of the RSX class in Australia, working closely with the importers and YA to establish a new Olympic class. We held the 1st racing and series including youth events. We also paid all the expensive class fees to make sure the class was legal.
After a few years the stake holders set up their own RSX association and righty so moved towards the YA.
The AWA has always made itself supportive to the RSX racers, as we are all windsurfers at the end of the day. Example is the fantastic participation from many of top RSX racers at last years FW Nationals and our offer to run their Nationals this year in conjunction with the Raceboard class.

Anyway this reads a bit like a defence, but it is really just a bit of history...Cheers

Which calendar should they be listed on? I looked at the RSX site (http://www.rsx.yachting.org.au/) and cannot see their events listed - are they listed somewhere else?
I know the AWA will list the events if they are supplied.

as said earlier rsx is more closely affiliated with YA and YWA rather than AWA
so if you look on the YWA calendar you should be able to find the events the rsx are invited to.
As for their world championships, they are a part of the perth 2011 regatta so for more information on this event just google "perth 2011"

Indeed I am - Problem?

I am only trying to find the calendar for RSX so it can be included. I don't sail an RSX so have no idea where to find the event listing.

3rd-18th December 2011 - RSX World Championships, Perth

Lets make a list of events for the RSX and I am happy to forward it to AWA and ensure it is on their calendar too. Feel free to add to this post.

Hi Mobi,
I have a JP SLW and I've had two formula boards. There is a range of performance in formula boards and they have changed a lot since 2004/5, but I'll make some general comments re. the boards I've owned and ridden. The SLW planes earlier than the 2010 formula board I owned, with a smaller sail. Using the same 70cm fin in both the SLW planed with a 7.8 race sail when the formula board required a 9.9 race sail (of the same make) to plane in 9-10 knots. The SLW gybes much easier as you might expect. If you can do a plane out gybe the SLW makes it seem easy, whereas you've got to work much harder on most formula boards to gybe well. The SLW goes upwind and downwind well with a 70 or even a 54 fin when powered up, but will never beat a formula board. The SLW is probably as fast as a formula board on a beam or broad reach but not as fast as my carbon JP slaloms. Of course the formula board wants to hunt upwind and you have to fit a smaller fin (eg 60cm), or use the chicken strap and force it off the breeze or all three to beam reach powered up.
