Thanks Nebbian, I think I'll just buy one like Mr nobody's unit. Thats what I've been trying to find for a while now. $200 is a small price to pay when you consider that with my electrical skills I would probably burn my shed down trying to build one.
Thanks for the pics and info.

I made a hotwire using 0.8mm Stainless Steel MIG welding wire, the power source was a welding machine.
Welding machines are set at a max 70V open curcuit so they are safe.
You can vary the amps from 0 - 130 on a small machine, worked great.

Went to altronics today looking for the same unit Mr no one had. Ended up with a 15volt variable power supply for $45.00, stoked.
Cut out 2 blanks with it this arv and it works really well.
Thanks for the info

Hey Hoop,

Is it current limited? As in, can you limit the current to a certain amps, or is it just voltage? How many amps can it supply?

Even if it's just voltage limited it's a real bargain, well spotted

It goes from 5volts 5amps to 15volts 3.8 amps. It just has one dial to wind it up or down. It's a basic little thing but it seems to do the trick pretty well.

Just a quick question??
what kind of foam are you guys using for the core and what density id it?
and where do you get it from?

thanks
oh and I am based in Brisbane so have you got any ideas to get some?

Hey 555, what did you use to position the wire? How do you control it? Did you write the software yourself? Hats off to you, a CNC project isn't for the faint-hearted

The setup is for cutting glider wings, so has two independent 2-axis wire positioning 'towers' with the wire running between them. I used stepper motors pillaged from old photocopiers, and made up the chassis and rails from aluminium, and other photocopier bits as well as some other parts I made in a mate's workshop (he has precision engineering gear that I can only dream of..). The driver board was a kit I got from the US, and it's all controlled through free software running on an old PC.

Nope. I didn't write any of the software, or design any of the circuitry, but the mechanical side is all mine. Takes about 9 minutes to cut two wings, and about 10 seconds to competely change the design ready to cut something else.

I was rummaging through my boxes of "stuff that's waiting to be useful" the other day in search of some small springs, and came across a matching set of grunty stepper motors that I'd carefully put away.. Maybe I should build a CNC fin shaping machine.. At the price fins sell for, it should pay for itself in no time!

Jamesy ,the foam is 13kg /m3 polystyrene. Just look up foam in the yellow pages ,it shouldnt be hard to find. Not sure what density others are using but this seems to be fine.

Years ago I bought a big block of 24kg/m3, because all my boards then were going in waves, and I have a habit of landing big jumps flat.
But even so think it may have been overkill.
Just about at the end of the block now, my next boards will probably be 13kg/m3.
