That's right , this nice gust that give you this feel alive and the speed.
But all is the matter of water surface. If there is plain enough that you could release full speed without loosing control on the chop that is fine.
But same place three days earlier and me on 5.7 on 35ktn even smaller board and all I could do was only snail pace climbing on the waves, not much fun at all.

Macroscien, I think your guestimation of wind strengths is out a little. I think I remember that from a previous post.

83kgs with a 5.7m in 35 knots does not work to the best of my knowledge, and I doubt a 8.0m in 25 knots would work for you either.

I remember last dispute re wind speed so I am more careful and provide SB graph as a proof also.
BTW 35 ktn ( in gusts) on 5.7 is not a pleasure to sail but fully manageable.
See another thread when very experienced sailors (much , much better then me) complain that sailing on his 4.2 completely overpowered was also a hassle. Same place same time. But they been doing jumps and tricks. Me just sailing the chop-waves size.

actuallly gusting up to 40 so by saying 35 I am on safe side.

Hi Macroscien, I am still a bit surprised. Why was this other (much, much better) sailor overpowered on a 4.2m and you were on a sail 1.5m bigger?

^^^ agreed

Macro, firstly you should read the middle of the arrow, not the tip.

Thos gusts could be 1sec peaks and only every 15mins so 5.7 in 35 is misleading. It was 5.7m used in 22-25, with odd gusts to 35ish.

When you sail a solid 35, with gusts to 40 and no lulls, I mean solid 35 all afternoon - you will know what I mean.
Last time I did I was 100kg, on an 80L waveboard and 4.0m and I struggled. Small blokes were on 3.2 did half an hour and went home.

That is 35kn.

Mark, you do sail on open sea, on the waves I guess. I am not ready for that yet, only for sheltered internal waters.
For me the main difference is if I could hang full weight and let the board to go full speed regardless of the small chop or I need actively slow down - and that is awfully tiring.
I don't want even to mention - that this first gust on the graph (30-35-40 ??) get me in the middle of the water and I needed to go back to the beach. I don't want even mention it because sailing on 8.0 RAM is completely ridiculous and what only saved me that was so sudden that water was still smooth.
IMO is you are standing on the grass and still could hold the sail , means that you still could sail it also - if the water is smooth.

Similarly, I remember sailing a genuine 35 knots at Safety Bay, and at a lardy 96kgs, I was just able to hold onto a 4.7m on a 76L wave board.

It was from sand bar to sand bar, and there was no question of trying to turn.

Those were the good old days, when you had to stand behind the trees to stop being blown away!
