mate I was gonna start a thread on this. I don't know what its like in october but I have just spent 2 frustrated weeks in bali. may to september is "kite season" the sky is constantly (day and night) filled with thousands of kites. some of them are bloody huge ( 3-4metres wide and 6 metres long). the wind was 14-16 knots every day with some stronger periods on some afternoons and the water is beautiful. I tried in vain to find a decent board to rent but found nothing but some old crappy gear or some stand up paddle boards with sails. there is a bit of kite surfing there and rentals for that is available at blue oasis at Sanur and from this other mob who also do stand up paddle. their website is www.bali-kitesurfing.org/ and they have info on the best spots and seasons on there as well. I don't know anything about sailing in waves but the flatwater is enticing on its own. If nothing else the bintang is always good and surf is always awesome somewhere.

Would be a sensational spot for sailboarding on Eastern side of island. I hope there is somewhere. You cant beat Bali and it would be even better if there was somewhere to sail decent gear.

Club Med may have some gear but you might have to be staying there - worth checking out.

I was in Bali just last month. Apparently Blue Oasis at Sanur is the only windsurfing rental place around on Bali. But the gear there is quite old and limited as you can see below. The water there is rather shallow too for quite a distance…with tons of water plants & corals. Only saw 2 people trying windsurf…1 was a japanese guy who was pushing his own gear out. He seemed to be walking on & on forever.

A friend of mine was kite-surfing there and got dragged by his kite, resulting in cuts all over from the corals...looked as if Wolverine attacked him. So do be careful.

have just been reading the spot guide and the channel between sanur and tutle island sounds like a sweet flat water spot and the black sand beaches north of sanur stretch forever and there isn't any reef. I think I'm gonna try and take some gear over with me if I go back for christmas.

What would the excess baggage cost?

it will cost a bit but as I can fit all the clothes for a 7 day trip to bali in my carry on then I would probably only have about 10 -15kg excess cos I don't own much stuff. If my tax return works out well and I can buy more stuff to use here i may ship it over and leave it there ( sister lives there).

Blue oasis is the only one I can find on the net. Pics look a bit better than those posted. How long ago was that ?

Just so some of you guys know, there are different rules for sporting equipment on some airlines. It actually works out a bit cheaper in some cases than excess baggage

Or just slightly hold up one end of your board bag when they weigh it, like I did last trip over.

I cannot remember if they provide, they might have the kite ones. I always bring my own just in case.

Hey I just remembered another place, Sumbawa. But it's a 1 hour flight from Bali, and according to this website, a 2.5hour journey to the spot called Lakey Peak :

I've seen videos on it, crazy waves there. Worth checking out if you've got time. I think you gotta bring your own equipment there though.

We are partially living in Bali and we are windsurfer. We use to go to Serangan Island (just opposite he Sanur beach) and we can windsurf most of the time and without being depending so much on the tide. There is a good passage out to the open sea as well. But we are using our own gear ( Big boards: Lorch breeze S 125l and M 138l)
Rental? Hm, Blue Ocean is so far ok but the gear is relly not up to date. Bring your own surf-shoes (in Serangan the going in is rocky) and harness.
As seen in the picture (F2 Sputnic or Thommen) they are min 10 years old. And in my oppinion its expensive too. From Blue Ocean you need at least +-2 hours from high tide.

Sorry, we are leaving Bali already on 8th October so we can, thelp much but if you need to know something, just send us a mail (johann.brunner@yahoo.de)

October is not so good for wind but you may be lucky. Windsurfers know how to wait for it.
