Well it's on again! last years KA Sail Caloundra Wind & Surf Speed Challenge has had a rename and is now
"Burrum Windfest"
/images/misc/forum-image-missing.gif
the applications are ready for MSQ approval and the barge has been booked! I should have confirmation of the dates for everyone late next week or not to long after that.
At this early stage i can tell everyone we are aiming for around the end of march in 2010, only 3+ months away. we are also looking towards 3 days of competition for this years event.
For those new to the event.
Burrum heads is half way between hervey bay and bundaberg on the QLD coast. Burrum is a sleepy seaside town that centres around it's river and some of the best windsurfing and fishing in qld. The clear blue waters and palm tree lined beaches are home to QLD's best speed and one of australia's best speed venues producing 4.5km of dead flat speed runs that suit any wind direction and produce consistent breezes.
The event prides itself as a friendly and relaxed time for windsurfers and their families. There is plenty of hard fought speeds on the water and lots of laid back fun after the sun goes down. The end of event is marked with an awards night with prize presentations.
as with previous years most stay for the week to enjoy the conditions and holiday in the sun.
for a look at the venue!
video from last year
Nigel I had a great time when I went this year, everyone's very friendly and it's well run
Might be a good number of NQ'ers next year, give our southern cousins a run for their money I'll bring the rum
For a 80kg traveller, "me".
Can you guys give me indication of the size boards & sails most suited to Burrum
Gestie,
off topic i know...but
Do you have the psycho's belting out of speakers down the course a la the video - awesome footage - made me want to grab some new slalom gear (i would then have to convince the bride that the formula gear had shrunk)
I lived in Central Vic during the early mid nineties and had the pleasure of watching chief psycho Ross Knight on the footy field - one word can desribe his playing style - tough
will have to make it in '11
hi icesurf,
wil lbe good to see you at the event.!
i agree with sausage for his gear selection, but would include a small sail, if you only want to bring 3 sails then 7.5, 6.8, 5.6 or there abouts.
also bring some smaller fins if you have them. the water is so flat that the tail will walk earlier than on bumpy stuff.
to sail every day you will probably need board similar to sausages comments. definately need a big one for the light stuff.
the good thing about the burrum strip is that there is no land stopping the breeze so you can almost count on wind. (i don't want to jinx things but) last couple of events we've had between 15 and 25 knots every day and that seems to be the norm. i have spent hours looking through BOM data i purchased to figure out the windy season up there and march has the highest percentage of windy days across the month. jan,feb are also good but not quite matching march.
we are also trying to get approvals for a giant slalom race so some bigger gear may be usefull for that.
like a lot of others i will be there for a week so expect the sailing to continue post and pre event. the chances of getting good wind at least once over that week is very high. typically the wind is 10-15 knots early from the SW then swings S-SE later and increases.
also thanks firrie and guys for all of the positive feedback about the event. looks like this years event will be even bigger again which is a great outcome and somehting we are striving to achieve.
so instead of " I love the smell of napalm in the morning" it could be " I love the smell of burning pig on the speed strip"
