Some call it the Lechenault Inlet at Australind.

too much foliage around now Adrian. It really has blocked most of the wind from getting in.
Sydney wise our 3 (?) best spots are alongside the runway in a Nor Easter although I have only known of Rick Murray (AUS4) getting a 40 there, Sandringham, but that is tide dependant and will only ever be 2 second peak spot due to its length and then Narrabeen Lake in a westerley but also only a 2 second peak location. Sandringham has had multiple 40 knot runs, Narrabeen has seen speeds close but I can't remember if 40 has been broken there yet.
Wineman has talked about the Hastings River (3-4 hours Nth of Sydney) potentially having a good speed spot but it's yet to be fully exploited. I know some of the guys up Port Macquarie way (5 hours North) talk up Queens Lake and have done some great speeds there, high 30's.... I think Sanctuary Point (2-3 hours South) must hold some secret spots too but not having sailed there myself I can't comment.

i agree with Bender, given wind in the right direction I think this location will produce some excellent results across all of the GTC divisions, I had one sail here last year when the water was great, the wind was excellent for a while, just needed to stay consistent for longer. I am real looking forward to getting to sail it on a consistently windy westerly day

OK Guys, this is what I have got so far as 'Established and Frequented' potential record speed venues in Australia. The intention is to make a list for the WGPSSRC where record attempts would not need to be pre-announced because they have an established track record of high performance and it is highly likely that there will be a number of speed sailors there on any given potential record breaking day.

If your pet spot is missing it is probably because I have made a judgment that they don't fit into the aforementioned criteria. If you think otherwise please convince me.

If I have got the names wrong or listed the same place under two different names please inform me.

Here is what I have got so far:

Sandy Point, Victoria, Australia
Lake Connewarre, Victoria
Hardies Run, Mandurah, Western Australia, Australia
Pt Walter, Western Australia, Australia
Melville Beach, Western Australia
Woodmans Point, Western Australia, Australia
Burrum Heads, Queensland, Australia
Wellington Point, Queensland, Australia
Victoria Point, Queensland, Australia
Green Island, Queensland, Australia
Stanley, Tasmania, Australia
Boggy Lake, South Australia
Lake Bonney, South Australia

Recent results also suggest Henty River (Strahan??) in Tas

Yeah, I considered that but thought if you are going down there it is quite a trip and you would know the day before so it would be easy to pre-announce it. Also, it is not that 'frequented'. :-) Still open to it though.....

Whilst you're at it Andrew, I suppose you couldn't conjure up a speed strip in Yeppoon somewhere?

Since the WGPSSRC is for a single ten-second run, let's rate this list on how good these spots are. I can only comment on places I've been, obviously. Feel free to disagree.

Sandy Point 10/10. Nothing else comes close. If it were a batsman it would be Don Bradman. Virtually perfect.

Hardies Run 7/10. Long, consistent and the best in WA. Some versatility in wind direction. Plenty of hazards.

Pt Walter 5/10. Horrible, rocky, gusty ** of a place but occasionally produces the goods.

Melville Beach 6/10. Better than Pt Walter but weedy of late. Sailable in winter wind directions unlike most others.

Woodmans Point 5/10. Aquamarine waters make it a nice place to sail but the strip is too short for speed and generally clogged with kiters. Not going to break any records here.

Good idea Chris, anyone else thats sailed Sandy Point plus some of the other places got a suggested rating, based on 10/10 for Sandy Point (or re evaluate SP if the other spots better)

Fair comment Chris, but there are other categories being considered for WGPSSRC records. There is also a 'Record Ranking' and it is quite possible sailors at venues other than Sandy Point could get quite respectable rankings.
I suspect a Norwegian or Swedish record might well be on the cards at one of the WA venues as well.

I do think this place has record breaking potential, for sure. Looks like a 10/10 to me!
