Hi all have locked in the dates for GISW-July 8-12 2010.
Web site www.greenislandspeedweek.com has been updated with some new photos & this year's format.
Would love to see as many enthusiastic speed sailors as possible !!
This should be a great chance for many of you to escape the winter doldrums & sail at a genuinely stunning location .
Cheers,Cam
Cam,
Congrats on getting this year's event organised. Website looks great too.
I'm so hoping I can get up there this year regardless of forecast. Just sorting out if my better half is going to come or if not, whether I'm allowed out on my own .
Thanks Cam, I've just put in for leave to get there, so hope to get back for some more fun in the sun this year.
ps I'm coming up for a practice run on 27-30th May if the forecasts good. Catch up with ya then.
EDIT: weathers looking crap this weekend so will see yas for the event!
27 knots at green island right now, and has had green
arrows most of the week!
Can't wait to get back.
Kellie will be coming. I'm surplus these days, the software can run itself, but if any cheap fares come up I may be there.
Dylan.
Just booked a room, Gaz and I will share. Snag, my wife's letting me go on my own this year cos last year she went and probably realizes there's bugger all chance of getting into any trouble there.
Either the resort on Green, last year they did the 'locals' rate for event participants (you don't want to pay tourist rate ). Otherwise you can commute from Cairns on the ferry daily.
From memory, last year it was about $350/night.
We home-stayed in Cairns for a few nights, and Kellie commuted, and then we finished off with a few nights on the island.
The local rate is $299 per night (for 2 people) which includes breakfast (HUGE and enough for all your days energy needs if you pig out) plus transfer ferry costs. No charge for your sailing gear to and from. The resort is very comfortable and clean.
Commuting each day on the ferry costs >$50 for locals and >$70 for tourists, car parking $10 per day so unless you can get reasonably cheap accom in Cairns then works out that staying at the resort isn't that much dearer.
Very relaxing/
Hope to see a few of you there.
I am at looking at heading up on the Friday and staying for 2-3 nights on the island. is anyone interested in sharing a twin bed room? it will be $150 each including breakfast and transfers from cairns.
The forecast looks good this weekend, might have to head over to test the water temp. Hope the 1mm rashy's not too warm.
Just got back from a weekend @ Green Island. Fantastic trip thanks again to Dr Cam for his hospitality. The resort is Fantastic, staff freindly & service second to none.
Wind never dropped below 20knts day & night. Highlight of the trip was the sunset sailing, just awesome.
If you haven't already booked your annual windsurfing / family holiday yet, you should definately consider Green Island for Speed week. Windy or not, it is a great location.
If anyone can travel on short notice this week is looking seriously windy for Green Island.(The dates correspond with speed week from last year!!)Some good low tides are expected fromWED-SUN...
Check out the seabreezes predictions.
I'll be on annual leave from WED & there's plenty of room at my place so feel free to come & break some local records!!!
As I write the graph has 33 knots on Arlington Reef (about 6klms from Green IS)
yeah there is a shed to leave gear in so you wont have to drag it back and forth every day.
absolutely nuking up there today and that will probably be lightest day all week until friday.
i've had word the 40 knot barrier was broken out there this morning in unfavourable tides, they are improving later in the week so we should see some pretty solid speeds!
Troppo. BoM have moved the weather station from GI to a new site at Arlington. Should have more accurate wind data than the old site at least.
Two more reasons for it being called green island.
The color of the arrows.
The (emotional) color of the people who arent there.
Enjoy it all of you lucky enough to be there !
