KA Sail Caloundra Wind & Surf Speed Challenge

After the inaugural event last year we are back again! this years event will be even bigger. to improve the event we asked all competitors from last year to provide feedback. this years event will incorporate all of those outcomes.

last years event was a great success so this year we will be pushing to take things even further. the format will remain as per last year with a few important updates.

firstly - the venue. Burrum heads we believe is a serious location for speed in qld. we will still cater for recreational and serious speedsters wit hthe radar camera and gps categories but we will be doing it at a world class venue!

secondly - the major prize of the 2008 Koncept will be lucky draw. everyone entering has a chance to take home the sail. the winners of each class will still be awarded prizes so there is something for everyone and the possibility to win more than one prize.

thirdly - is the timing to be confirmed

lastly - the incorporation of an awards dinner/party to end the event which will include prize giving.

currently the promo poster is at the printers and a website is under construction. i am announcing the event now to provide time for us all to organise in advance and get excited!

Brilliant! cant wait.

For those who may be looking for a good place to stay I can recommend Burrum Sands holiday units right on the beach. They have only 2 one bedroom units left over easter.

Justin, it would be great to get the local media involved.
Let us locals know if we can help out in that regard.

i must say i am very embarassed...... please hold off booking accomodation.

the dates of the fishing classic i was given which is usually for april have changed this year and will be march! on the easter long weeekend.

i will have to reschedule the event for the easter holidays which happen in early april. the confusion has occurred because this year the easter long weekend happens 2 weeks prior to the school holidays.

my apologies to everyone. i will reconfirm the dates before the end of the day.

Well, looks like we are up there for the Easter weekend regardless of the final date. We'll be staying at the sands (burrumsands.com.au)

I am not certain of the importance of school holidays, as I don't believe any of the competitors are school children. Am I wrong?

If, on the other hand, the issue is the dodging of anglers, I can see the potential problem.

hi Dylan,

i had booked also at the sands, after announcing the event last night i got in early and booked today. Luckilly i managed to get it changed and they tell me they have lots of space during the easter holidays.

the problem is the anglers fishing from the bank during the comp, i don't want to have us decend on the venue in the middle of a long running fishing comp.

i have spoken with the fishing club and they are also disappointed with the easter long weekend not being part of the school holidays.

the last few years the fishing comp has been in april. so i planned around that. It was moved this year to march to coincide with the easter long weekend because it is an easter long weekend fishing comp, hence the clash.

i will confirm with the sponsors tonight and let everyone know the new date. the next best tide after the easter long weekend is the first week of the school holidays so i would suggest that's when it will be.

cheers

Ok the date for the event is

Sunday 6th & Monday 7th of April 2008.

that is the first weekend of the easter school holidays and allows saturday to be used as travel time to get to the event.

Gestalt, is there a reason for choosing Sunday/Monday for the event?

The low tide is not until 2:30 pm on the Saturday, doesn't that allow people enought time for travel on Saturday morning?

Wouldn't Saturday/Sunday get a bigger attendance?

People can choose to drive home on Monday if they wish, but if the event finishes on Monday evening then people must drive home on Tuesday.

I realise it's school holidays but realistically how many of us are still in school?
Wouldn't most of us need to be back at work on Monday morning?
(The obvious exception being Haircut )

saturday being the first day of easter holidays will see the roads very busy. so those coming from north and or south requiring a 4+ hour drive (which will probably be more like 5+) will need saturday for travel and then the tuesday for travel.

it is not possible for some of us to arrive saturday rig the gear and sail. we need time to organise familly etc. the event is open to everyone including those with famillies and also those from other states. i have competed previously in 2-3 days comps that require travel time and you really need to allow 1 day either side.

Wow,
this looks like a fantastic spot. Thanks for the pics....

Does anyone know if there camping grounds nearby, or is it a case of bunk down in Hervey Bay and drive to the spot?

Cheers Phil

If you are looking at Elders Burrum Heads (link in the above post) they have a really big list of holiday rental houses.

We've looked at a few in the past, and my best recs for Windsurfers are #17 (The Grand) and #20 (Moonshadow). Both are direct beach access with large grassy areas, esp #20, and both sleep 6 people.

Elders has a map of the holiday lets at http://www.eldersburrumheads.com.au/map.htm

Burrum Sands resort is right next door to #20 on the map.

There is another place like Burrum Sands about 100m closer to town. Its called the San Marco Villas, and is probably the only other place in town with a swimming pool. They also have a disabled access ramp into the water, which can be really handy at high tide. Their website is www.sanmarcovillas.com.au

Hi Knotboard.

things are still moving along nicely. i have been doing lots of behind the scenes work so this thread has gone a bit quiet.

latest update is that we will see 2 more sponsors come onboard for the event. I will have more details hopefully soon on that. plus the challenge graphics are almost complete. they will be going online soon too.

cheers
Justin.

A few of the computer illiterate locals (including myself) are very excited about this event so bring it on. How do we nominate or do we just turn up on the Sunday at 0900hrs. If it's windy I will be there Saturday to sail with any early birds so just let me know. I just checked the tides and having 0.4mt tides at 1500hrs is as good as it gets so all we need is good wind/direction and it will be perfect. Vando can show all the new commers where the rocks are and I can show them where the worst possible location to break your boom is.
Has anyone thought of a safety vessel, just for peace of mind for everyone.

Hi Porkchop,
You didn't have to close the school on my behalf

I have though about bringing my boat along but there are implications for safety and responsibility. First someone else would need to operate the boat as I will be sailing. Secondly if the wind really comes up any rescue is likely to be performed in conditions which are dangerous for boating. Behind the sandbar would be fine, but if someone goes past the last channel marker and breaks a boom in 20+ knots that would be a different story.

I'd say usual rules apply, don't go out further than you're willing to swim.

All that said, I know one of the local sailors who participates in this forum has a boat which is much bigger than mine, if he reads this he might offer his services if we ask him nicely

I have a bigger boat but I would not call "Pork Chop" a rescue vessel. It was a good day to sent all the students home whether it be a drill or just me wanting to go home and sand my fins ready for Easter. Wind is up tomorrow but tides aren't great, any movements anywhere

Hi guys,

yep, have planned for safety.

firstly, Marine safety QLD require all rescue boats to be inflatable.

we will be hiring one. are there any hire places around burrum or hervey bay?, may be a better option then bringing one up from brisbane. any help with this is appreciated.

also all competitiors will need to wear PFD's . i will bring some spares.

lastly, Insurance. all competitors will need to hold AWA insurance, this can also be sorted on the day during signon.

cheers
Justin.

Don't know of any local places that hire out inflatables. If you have access to one in Brisbane it might be best to bring it up.

PFDs may be an issue for some of the locals (don't even know if they will know what the acronym stands for), I have access to many "life jackets" so let me know how many you want me to grab (PFD2's ok).

What will the extra cost for insurance be and do we nominate prior or on the beach.
