Ouch Moby, I only hit the water. Looks like you collected the mast.

I ended up ontop of the sails so yeah I think I hit the mast. My hip was bruised. I was a bit winded for a while.

I think it the crash happened because the fin was a bit sloppy in the slot plus the board was a bit big. After the crash I swapped boards with my 105 Rocket and it was fine for the rest of the day with the same sail and fin.

The impact killed my GT-11. It came back with a weird message on the screen, like a Mac in trouble. It shortly died afterwards that day.

Itss great to document crashes

I'm thinking of making a 17cm 60deg fin for this spot.
Has anybody tried this sort of fin in very thick weed?
Does it help??

might be worth thinking about making a delta style fin for that amount of rake

heres a fin i just finished ( a pepe design)it's a 19cm 45deg got a 29+NM AND 33+ 2SEC never ever looked like letting go, the leading edge has to be really thin infact the whole fin has to be thin considering the surface area
i have the 15 delta and its really twitchy in fact scary off the wind, i have seen the 19 and its huge and weighs a ton
the fin in the pic is 373grams and incredibly stiff,

Nice work keef, but 45 just won't cut the mustard through snake bite weed banks.

Keef, it looks to me from the photos about 5% thick at the base (~23cm base chord and about ~11.5mm thick). I think with this concept you need the sharp LE to get the vortices to keep the flow attached.

You could put a handle on that and use it in the garden as well!

So what size board and sail will that shovel handle?

Finished 2 fins today, (well actually 3 but one is for Keef)

Reboxed an old SOS elliptical pointer @ 50deg at the base, and a timber carbon made from scratch, was designed for 45deg but pushed it to 47deg when I boxed it.
The 50deg is 18.5 cm deep and the 45deg, 19.5cm.
Obviously both would look better with another coat of paint, but they are smooth enough to use as is.

I've glued a piece of rubber inner tube to the overhang at the front squashes down nice and tight, should stop any weed getting trapped and shouldn't damage the board. Hard to get a smooth finish on the rubber but, hope that doesn't cause a problem
Might get to try them tomorrow if it's deep enough.
If the weed banks have got any thicker, the 47deg won't have enough rake, but the 50deg with it's increasing curve may just do it.

Oh yeah here's Keef's, a 26cm, 45deg cedar/carbon, weight 257gms.

spoke to decrepit about the %?, he said the longer cord fins need to be thinner

i tested another 2 fins out in the past 2 days, friday winds averaging 25 to 30 knts on a naish 60 N/PRS4.6 and sat ca55 + N/PRS7.2 15 to 20knts

fri 18cm 2sec 34.56 NM 28.93 sat 19cm + 22cm 2sec 34.03 NM 29.94
some specs 18cm cord= 22.50 x 11mm thick
19cm cord= 23.00 x 12mm thick
22cm cord= 22.50 x 12mm thick
so far i have used the 19cm on a 4.6 5.5 6.2 and a 7.2 and very surprised how it handled chop not that you could call it chop ,
first fin 18cm second 22cm

Well I said I "thought" they need to be thinner, but I'm no expert.

As yoyo thought they're about 5%.
How do they go upwind?????

The worry with fins that thin, is that they stall at high angles of attack.

Looking at your NM results, you'd be complaining if they didn't get back up wind.

I think you may be onto something here, our heavier guys could benefit from one of these fins, let them join me in the flat shallow weedy areas.

Think I'll make one and see how it goes.

mike today i thinned out both the 19 and the 22 not much but seeing the 18 is so thin and never let go once in 30 knts, just testing the waters so to speak

Looking at your NM results, you'd be complaining if they didn't get back up wind.
these fins are for shallow water and smoke to windward ,i didnt have any problems going to windward with the 19 and 7.2 sail and remembering i used the same fin with my 4.6mt and naish sp60
after saying that the narrow fins can feel very loose off the wind , again if they do let go its more like the the tail side slipping rather than the fin exploding and ending up in a catapult
im still testing the 3 fins i have and experimenting with the foils , ill keep in touch on how there going

Hey guys!

I found pictures of your custom delta fins on google.
They look great! Im glad to see when people make their own fins! :)
Its easiest to buy new fin in the surf shop, but when you make your one fin
and ride it, this is greatest pleasure...
Below are pictures of delta fins that I made.
Hope you like it! But I havent tested them yet.

The rest of my fins and custom windsurf equipment made in Croatia, you can see here:

Hey there Keef, the new shallow water weedie, yet to be baptised. Not completely confident just yet but, we'll see. Designed for a 7.5-8.0 sail and a 125 rocket..69cms. Done most of the maths and it should be 550 sq cms, the same as a 44cm weed fin by (some) manufacturers.
Decided to make it from poly as it's maybe a bit more wear resistant....30cms.

looks spot on pepe , that fin looks good from 6.5 up not sure about the poly being more wear resistant but you will find it heaps stiffer than epoxy
