Hmmmm. Interesting to see that Foxy only rates it as 25-35 Knots

seems at odds with the Wilson Prom wind stats

By the way, how come Foxy does his best runs when no one else is there?

It's only fair

Everyone else does PB's when Ian's not there

Not necessarily. The wind can be quite different sometimes at the Prom and the peak of the wind can arrive at different times. My neighbor did say that the wind got stronger at Sandy Point around midday and peaked in the afternoon/evening.

See this graph from Yarram which is the next nearest recording station close to the coast just to the east of the Prom and sometimes reflects actual wind conditions at Sandy Point more closely than the Prom (although it is usually a bit under what Sandy gets). Note that the strongest winds were more after midday and the strongest gust was at 5.45pm, just on dark.

It would be nice to have a proper recording station at Sandy Point on the sand spit!

might be difficult if the tide overflows it

I spent the weekend at SP and the tides were very low,so I think Ian would have had the 9am low and a few hours of incoming(and then it probably kept coming with the serge).
I would have thought it was South West to South in and through low tide and some West swingers later on.
It was Nuking and these are the wind strengths we have been sweating on for the last few months,so when they appeared Ian scored and that's a credit to his experience and vigilance.

My respect for his skill has gone up immeasurably. Just to survive a mid winter Victorian storm in a wetsuit , let alone get 45 knots out there on your own. The first winter I had in Melbourne I froze my nuts off.

Did you get out yourself?

No.
A woman in the city had taken the day off work so that I could put a heater in her house, she would have wanted blood if I didn't show...
In hindsight I would give her a pint of blood for that session!
