Sorry if this has been covered before.
Im having trouble updating the firmware on my gt31. Ive downloaded the latest firmware but when i use the updater it starts normally but when it gets to 96% i get a message that says "firmware update failed exit code 1".
Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

I've had this before, and found success either in using a different USB cable, or a different USB port on the computer. (Can't remember which!)

Ah yes, particularly this bit:

Hi all,

As visiting from the Netherlands I saw this thread about the new GT-31 firmware.
I noticed that some of you have problems by updating the new firmware ( The error 1 issue ).

Here's the solution:

Make sure when your GT-31 is connected to your pc, but don't put it in Navilink mode. In that case you won't be able to update.

In menu on the GT-31 go to:

1. Settings
2. Version --> Update
3. Choose "yes". After that nothing happens and it looks like the device freezes, but's that ok. Don't worry...

Now go to your update installer, choose the correct COM port, leave the program to "normal".
Browse to the new firmware --> select the firmware --> execute.

Now things should work just fine !

Best regards,
Jeffrey

Brad,
If I remember rightly, try all the com (Com2, Com 3 & Com4) ports on the navi programme. Eventually it will be one of those that works (finger's crossed)

Hey Snags,
The only options it is giving at the mo is com 1 and com 11. Previously it has given me the options of com1 and com 8 and once it was com1 and com 9. I don't know why it changes or how to change it. Weird stuff

It was because i had it in navi link mode. You cant update the firmware like that. I found the right port by opening navi link and trying differnet ports until it would connect. Then exited navilink on the gps and went to settings-version and update. Worked first time. Read through the link Mineral posted its a way down but its there.
Great to meet you and the other crew at robe Jimbob. Would love to meet some of the speed demons. Prob not good enough at the moment to join a team but keen to get out for a blast with some other guys!

Ok I put it in navilink mode and found it connecteted with com11, so went across to gt31 updater but still the same message error code 1 or something like that.

brad1: Read the messages above.

Do not put it in Navilink mode.

You cannot update firmware successfully in Navilink mode.

See the post I quoted above for exact step-by-step instructions on what to do.

I flashed two GT-31s tonight using those instructions and it worked first time.

Dylan.

Finally it worked. only reason I had it in navilink was to see which port it was connecting with. There is probably better or easier ways to do this. The weird thing is I've been following these instructions in the forum for a couple of days now time after time with no success and all of a sudden it worked
Cheers

Fletch as Dave said just join up and have fun, I sail by myself 95% time but having some pb's to always try and beat keeps the sailing interesting and fun. its not just about speed but being an allrounder.

Lyn's gt-31 has frozen twice in the past week....This morning the battery was flat and
I checked and the Firmware is V1123T and has been for the last few months.
For something to do I tried to update it but just got the error message on the two available Com ports.
If it has the latest firmware and still freezes...Well I'm not too sure what to do next.
Mine has the same firmware and has not froze for a couple of years.
She used it today and it worked fine.

Please find post from GPSSS from Dr Tom regarding versions of firmware for GT31's

www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=forum&forum=1&val=20543

At present there are V1.2 V1.3 and V1.4 varieties of GT31 firmware in use. V1.2 is no longer supported by Locosys and V1.3 is destined for a similar fate, eventually. Version V1.4 addresses some reliability problems that GT31 Users have experienced.

To assist GT31 users to upgrade to V1.4 a new firmware upgrade procedure has been developed in cooperation with Locosys. This procedure is compatible with all firmware "V" versions and involves using GT31Upgrader V0.71 or later in " internal " mode. This upgrader is zipped together with V1.4 firmware and update instructions for your convenience.

New GT31 firmware upgrade procedure is faster and safer for your GT31 than previously published procedures. For details and GT31 firmware download please visit mtbest.net/setting-up-navi-GT31.htm

Just to add to Elmo's post:
Locosys also says that there is no need to upgrade to V1.4 if version that you currently use satisfies your needs.

Fletchk I also had FW update trouble. Reason was My vista pc os. As I was told
in this forum to hook your GT 31 up to an XP OS, and sure enough problem solved.

Did the update.
A few issues.
Firstly had to uninstall the previous version of the updater.
Little switch inside card slot is really hard to see

Sorry about the image but hopefully you get the idea

Then first attempt to update the boot file failed with the old "exit code 1" error message. Exited updater
Plugged navi into different USB restarted updater, selected the different com port and then worked fine.

One question though

When reviewing settings Interface seems to have changed to NMEA 4800
I am pretty sure I had it set to binary. Which should it be?

Just posting again as I notice the same question has just been asked on GPSSS.

When reviewing settings after updating to V1.4, Interface seems to have changed to NMEA 4800
I am pretty sure I had it set to binary. Which should it be?

I have used it for one session on binary and seemed fine.

Hi lao shi....My interface has always been on Binary .
Since your last posting I have updated both of our Navis and they are still on Binary.

Also since updating to V1.4 we have had no freeze up probsl.
Cheers Herby

From www.gps-speedsurfing.com/default.aspx?mnu=forum&forum=6&val=20874

SETTINGS>INTERFACE setting determines behavior of GT31 and GT32 when you connect them to PC for real-time map navigation.

Do you connect your GT31 or GT32 to computer when sailing?

If you don't - this setting is almost irrelevant for you. In the future GT31 and GT32 firmware versions you should be able to turn SETTINGS>INTERFACE>OFF so that GPS microprocessor is relieved from unnecessary computing when you sail. In the meantime, setting SETTINGS>INTERFACE>BINARY minimizes the burden on GPS microprocessor.

Thank you for bringing this setting to our attention and helping to optimize firmware/settings for our sport.

Tom

V1.4 firmware in GT31 and GT32 can actually detect if there is no USB connection and then suspends any interface.

So it truly does not matter what is the "interface" setting in GT31 and GT32.

I'm having the exit code 1 error issue when trying to update the firmware to V1.3 and/or V1.4 on my GT31. I've tried most, but not all USB ports on the computer (4 of them). I've tried moving the little switch across (which leaves the unit off). I've updated the installer and GT31 Updater is V07.1 and I've selected either 'normal' or 'internal'. Every time, no matter what it seems, I get the same error message. Have had a few different sessions trying to update from V1.2 and am not having much luck. Have also selected VERSION UPDATE in Settings and tried then, but still no luck. Have also removed all (I think) versions of everything to do with the GT31, reinstalled and still no luck. Have also tried two different cables? Have updated in the past without any problem (might have been my GT11 though) and am not sure now what could be the problem?

Any thoughts?
