Did you get any wind..I recognise that spot! Nice spot.
We went up that way kayaking a few months ago and had a break at your cleared spot.I walked the road to see if it was feasable to drive the van there and stay overnight .We decided not too as it was too close to the road so you'd get roadnoise but I think the van would have been too low to the ground anyway unless we were really careful. The corolla would have been ok.
Coming back in the kayaks the wind picked up and it was the first time I ever worried about coming out ( midwinter so the water was freezing). No hassles though they handled it easily.
Does it get clear wind in a Ne or is there a bit of a lee in close? The runs are ginormous!

The Nor-easter comes in real good and even gets an acceleration effect for a short distance from the tree line on the waters edge and the hill behind. If it gets a bit of East in it, it does get light in close.
HUGE runs that will give your thighs a workout, 7km into Coomba Bay and 8km to the top of the lake from the point (not including the tacks required to get there).
Oh, and the hill across the channel from the point create's a wind shadow as the wind rises over the top

What a great day! Thanks to Gabe and Larko for getting it all together. Great spot, warm water, sunny, and 25 knots of Nor'easter!

I posted a few pics up on the GPSTC website.

Sounds like a great day! I'd love to get up there sometime. The GPSTC sounds good great comeraderie. Good to see Greg's back on the water.
Couldn't sail today hopefully get out on Monday and got to go and get a decent harness this week in Sydney.

So there were a few women sailors there?

Just wanted to thanks everyone who came up/down to Booti Pt yesterday. It was an awesome day and great conditions. Stoked that the concept seems to have worked with natures help!!
The guys up there have a done a great job on a difficult area. Big effort to make the drive.
Thanks to the Millers for their hospitality and Sam and WSNS for the van and gear, just didnt get to use amuch of it due to the wind strength, not complaining though
Will start on the next one now, but after Xmas!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers,
Larko.

Resurrecting this thread in the hope we can generate some interest in having a similar GPS weekend this winter in some westerley or southerly winds.

If we do I'd suggest we do it at Canton Beach as its fairly central to many of us.

hi,, yeah, a canton version would be good, the booti booti day was good, if its gunna incorporate a few teams i like the idea of a tripple crown style competition. we can go to different locations to make for a more inclusive event, canton is sweet in a s to sw, so maybe the canton leg in winter, booti booti is good in a ne, so more of a spring, summer leg, now both these places are very similar to sail, flattish weed banks, great slalom to speed sessions, and then maybe a marmong event, or swansea, but marmong offers a little more chop, a little more of an open water sess,,, so two flat water sessions, one open water sess,, three lakes conquered,,,,,,, ONE ALMIGHTY KING CROWNED!!!!!!!!! or whatever i dont really care,,,,in fact last years event ended in massive controversy with the main organizer tallying up the data, only too then declare himself the winner,,,,,,pffffffff whatever!! haha, as well as its a session being monitored and judged, perhaps all the gps categories should be included for the overall winner, not just who got the best two second peak, as that only represnts one of the available six categories and it is a gps day style comp, not just a speed comp, c ya

Canton would be great for the Sydney crowd given the proximity. Just need some wind, soon please...

We have been having a few good sessions at Canton Beach so with that in mind I will be looking at holding an Autumn,Winter GPS comp in the coming weeks/months when we get a great forecast. As we know this is usually the time of the year for the doldrums so like the different cups up for grabs on the GPSTC it will be an on going format!!

So, if we get a good looking forecast, after consultation with a few of the local Canton sailors we will call a meet for some informal, no rules, no heats sailing. Just rock up, strap on your GPS and go sailing!! Easy as!!!!
Canton is a sweet location in fairly close proximity to both Sydney and spots further north.
About 90 minutes from Sydney, 40 minutes for the Lake Mac guys, 20 for the Central Coasters and I would guess about 2 hours plus for the mid-north coast blokes.

For those that have never sailed the spot its quite shallow and very, very weedy!!! The launch is around calf deep to chest deep out neat the yellow buoys. You can fit a Nm in (1852m) from end to end. You WILL need a weedy, with most guys running 36cm in the light stuff with 31-32cm in medium wind and 24-28cm in the stronger stuff. 45 degrees is the norm but if you have less raked then even better.
The water state is pretty much flat to small chop inside on the run with rolling swell and big chop out past the yellow buoys. Fair bit of parking, taps and toilets. Heaps of grass to rig on and friendly locals!!!

So keep your weekends open if the forecast is looking good and stay tuned!!!!
Cheers,
Larko.

If you want to make a weekend of it there is a van park at the end of Beach Pde, they have cabins and tent sites. The tent sites are right on the water front. I stayed there, had the gear rigged on the lawn all weekend and 20m walk to the water.

I am in. Have been seeing piccies of the Canton flat water and salivating. NRMA Trip Planner says 3hrs 10mins from Port Mac - but if the forecast looks like it will be cooking, that is a small price to pay.

Going today to try the loaned GPS- I'd prefer to use the 4.m + 95 but looks like the big cammed sails + big board so won't be very fast.Thats my excuse any way..

Anyone else going to Canton today?

Not sure how it would work in a WNW'er.

Westerly may be OK.

Wayno.

From memory you can sail it in a WNW but may have to go through choppier water.. heading down soon.

About 8 of us out at the Co op..Big gear 10 -18kts WNW..Got 25.11kts with the125 + 6.6m cammed sail.. scary going through the choppier stuff on a board + 60 of my weight..need a 110ltre..Only did c 6nm distance..cripes!Although I kept stopping to check the speeds.

I had heart palpitations so bad afterwards I could hardly drive home.I ending up getting ambo's to come out and test me once I was home..ok but said get it checked..getting too old.. Not just the sailing I can be cycling along happily for an hour or so feeling fit and then get them and just have to sit down and wait until they settle.. I almost faint as I get light headed .I didn't stop and rest yesterday when I first got them which is why they got me badly..

Looks like it might be good there today.Have fun..! Got work to do.

It could be on for Canton Beach this weekend. However the green arrows for Saturday and Sunday will probably turn brown, yellow and red before Friday. On the other hand the synoptic chart is looking encouraging with a solid southerly front passing through.

If its on I'll take the camera and tripod. I'd love it it others could use the camera while I'm out sailing too.

Perhaps its time to start a new thread.
