What is your favourite spot in sydney when it's blowing from the west?

What do people think about about Rose bay?

I've got to get a sail in this weekend and need to make it count, so recommendations on where to go near sydney would be much appreciated.

Rose bay is ok if you pushed for time, provided it's west or norwest. Generally ( if you have abit more time) if it's got abit of south in it head to la per, if it's got abit of north head to kurnell.

Gus, Dan is spot on if you are on the south side of Sydney. If north then Narrabeen lake if west and Palm Beach (pittwater side) if west or WNW. Wave sailing is limited unless it's strong and Long Reef worth a look if it gets over 20 knots.

I would say for rose bay you need at least WNW or NW, straight W you have to sail out too far to get to the wind line, then you have the island in the way a bit further out. NW is good (as it gets) though.

not in Sydney but further not far further South...

if you are after some wave sailing anything from WNW to SW seems the become SW in Gerroa. I think it's because of the mountain range in the hinterland. It also usually means that anything West is a bit stronger than elsewhere... the only problem is you will need a good size swell. There have been plenty of Westerlies this winter with large swell... main problem was that I wasn't too keen on going out by myself.

Alternatively Port Kembla works in W to SWW... if all else fails there is still Lake Illawara which particularly in a W to NW can be fun. Obviously no waves but there is a sandbar in the middle of the lake that has little 50cm chop attempting to break. It's right in the blast zone that usually gets the most wind. When you look at it from the beach you'd think it's flat as a table but once you get out there it's a lot of fun as you can pick the ramps with real precision.

As far as Sydney is concerned there really is only one spot I will sail in a W to SW and that's La Perouse. In that direction you will get quite a bit more chop than anywhere else on the bay or the harbour. Kurnell is only really good in a proper NW direction (I am sure the Cronulla crew will dispute that).

Rosebay is only for the really desperate.

1 vote for Lake Dangerous. Biggest bullets you'll find anywhere.

As I like flat water blasting with consistent wind and little chop I prefer Canton Beach. Only sailed there once and it was good.

The bad things about it are the weed which necessitates a weed fin and there are no taps to wash your gear off.

kurnell is good in all westerlys :P

even when it swings south you can sail off the point and the wind funnels thru the bay making it stronger than anywhere else on botany

only really sucks at low tide

Forecast for tomorrow is for 20-25 knots from the Nor'east.

Any recommendations for the eastern suburbs of Sydney or south Sydney beaches?

Thanks

I thought Rose Bay would work but the wind switched to the south at about 10am and LaPerouse was the best choice.

A good turnup at the Illawarra sandbar today. A little choppy but I'm sure hardened speed sailors could have gone close to 40 out there today. Plenty of length for Nautical miles - (yellow line is 1 NM)

When did you take that shot? Looks good. Just needs a few more sails sprinkled on the water.

They say narrabeen lake is safe for beginners which suits me, as I'm still a novice. But I also hear that there's only a narrow window where you get the wind and hence it's not much fun. What are your thoughts?

Where's the best place at Palm Beach to rig up and launch from (Pittwater side)?

It was blowing it's head off at Canton Beach. I gave a miss watching a few guys out on very small sails. They called it a day as it was too much. One bloke stayed out and he was going well.

If the wind had been a bit less it would have been great. Despite the gale the water was not too choppy. The wind was very consistent.

Kurnell was pretty intense today! I was totally overpowered on a 4.7m with 4.0m and smaller being the choice. A lot of fun though with 15+ sailors out. Kiters came out once the wind dropped under 30 knots!

Every one must have been hiding. I did a late one (4pm) at Laperouse and I was the only one out!

Kurnell was great - except for the 100m wind shadow off the beach.

Thought the same on the South Coast... went out at Gerroa ... early session at 10am for about 1 1/2 hours then again at 5pm... both times maxed on a 5.4... waves were between 4 and 6 foot. Packed up around 6 ... now the bomby is breaking solid mast and the wind just doesn't seem to let up. Now where is that Nor'Easter when you need it?

Des, I (and few other early risers) have been out there since 9am and packed up around 2pm. Wind dropped off at that time and I was more in the water than I was on the board. Had a fu#*ing awesome time

I had a busy schedule planned, so hit the water at LaPers at about 8am. Started out on a 4.7, and was fully maxed out so changed down to a 4.2 and was again fully maxed out... It was an intense couple of hours but a good experience.

Highlight: Sheeting in during a massive gust and unhooking from my harness lines, so I sheeted in even harder only to look down and realise I was hooked onto my boom... Fortunately this only lasted a couple of seconds as I was drilled in one of the heaviest catapults that I have had for a while. It totally knocked the wind out me

was out at La Per as well from about 9.30am or so. was completely overpowered on my 4.5 at times but when it settled down a bit it was awesome fun especially with some nice swells coming through. luckily we didn't have plans last night as I passed out on the couch at 9pm need to work on that fitness

Two words: Port Kembla. Mast high bombs, cold and sketchy. The 4.7 was a mistake

Was awesome when it was SW but about 10am it swung to dead west which made it tricky to get out with such large surf as it was quite cross off...also both of us sailing were also way over rigged on 4.7, 4.5. which didn't help. Epic waves though.

Thought so but didn't had family visiting so was short on time. Ah well... maybe next time.
