I always figure I've got more chance of being killed or maimed driving to the beach!

i wouldnt count on it if you were an average person that would be true but your not your splashing around in the water with sharks while every one else is watching tv , im pretty sure the odds of any of us getting taken buy a shark are way higher than dieing in a car accident .

nup, don't agree at all. Last year approx 1250 people died in car accidents, only 2 from shark bites.

Even if you look at it this way, 85% of our population live with-in 1 hour of the beach, and lets say only 20% of that population regularly swim in either the ocean or a coastal waterway that is around 3 million people. Now to be even more conservative, lets assume it is really only 1 million people that regularly use the ocean or waterways. That means .0002% of swimmers were killed by shark attack in 2012.

Lets assume that of our population there are 17 million regular road users, that means that .007% of all road users were killed in car accidents.

And that doesn't even consider those that were severely injured in accidents vs severely injured by shark attack. I think we still come out way ahead by sharing the water with these magnificent creatures.

I am with you aus301 your stats would be fairly accurate there - those odds are definitely stacked in our favour. Phew - will stick with the sport. Have fun

I have always said the same I have a much greater chance of injury or death driving than actually sailing.
I have actually hit a bull shark at over 30 knots so I should know.
Happy to show you where the good spots are around Lake Macquarie.

i know this is getting way to complicated but it needs to be converted to hours in the water 20% might go to the beach occasionally but for how long are they in the water , you also have to remember of the car accident statistics off the top of my head its something like 10% were on drugs , 30% drunk 30% driving to fast and i think people in rural areas had something like 3 times the chance of dieing than us in the cities also motorbikes make up a huge chunk of it so your chance of dieing on the road is significantly less than the national average .
i have no definite answer on the odds but its definitely not as simple as users / deaths per year
Its all way to complicated but my take on it is normally the chances of shark attack while windsurfing are very very slim but when you break a mast 2kms out and have to swim back while dragging equipment it would have to be a small but real threat .

There is no doubt that the fear of spending time in the water is certainly slowing down my progression/improvement with my sailing. Up here in the North we also have to contend with the possibility of crocodiles lurking beneath. At the end of the day if you choose to get out of bed in the morning you are taking some sort of risk. I enjoy sailing and the challenge of improving too much to stop doing it because of the associated risks.

As a previous shark attack survivor, I am already one of the rare statistics. The sea was angry that day my friends, a small bull shark latched onto the front of my leg at Manly. I threw my leg up onto the board and it let go!

Scot Farley simply said "where's its Mum?" and walked across the water to get out.

These days I rub tuna oil on myself before I go out. The odds of getting bitten twice are pretty long!

My only regret is that I did not rub some ink into the bite marks, would have made a great tuff sticker!

Bart,

I'm scared of hitting a turtle and falling into jellyfishes then being attacked by a shark and then bitten buy a sea snake before seagulfs eat my eyeballs.
But I still windsdurf!
