Upcoming Windsurfing Extravaganza
Get ready for a huge event coming up in March (exact date yet to be confirmed).
Expanding on the Neil Pryde "Learn to sail" program whereby a trailer loaded with Neil Pryde gear travels the states allowing people to trial the gear, Luke and Gail from Goodtime have combined forces with the Royal Queensland Yacht Club to put on an event which is touted to emulate the legendary Ledge to Lancelin race held annually in WA.
The format is a long distance marathon type race from the point in front of the yacht club to Green Island (weather dependant) and back. Goodtime is going to throw in some awesome prizes for the winners and the Yacht Club is going to provide a number of safety boats to make sure no one gets into trouble on the course.
The finer details regarding prizes, costs, dates and times will be announced shortly but the intention is to have a massive turnout and really showcase the sport.
So be sure to keep the calendar clear around mid March and spread the word. The event is open to all sailors from all locations, National or Queensland based.

Awesome !!!
I believe there is a lot of potential for this type of race in Qld. Really pleased to hear about this guys. I would love to see one on the Gold Coast too one day.
(Coolangatta to the Spit would be perfect!)
It does require a great name however. Any ideas for names? "The Green Island Classic" ??
(please, please NOT the first weekend of March though)
March is the perfect month I think, but hard to pin down a date and expect wind.
I'd be up for a practice run.
Apparently Ekki is sailing South East Asia so I hear, has some medical problems but I also heard on the mend a bit. His shop mate Bourquhart ? not sure of the spelling was at the Train on Sunday and talking about getting back into it.
Well the dates are now sorted, Saturday the 12th of March has been selected as the day of awesomeness, at work now but will put up more details later tonight.
I heard the course is AROUND Green Island.??? For various sailing craft. Obviously favouring centreboard vessels . But fact is . I dunno...??? does anyone ???
Hi Richie, there are two courses, one for the yachts etc with centreboards and one for the windsurfers. Sailboarders fall into the class C category

6pm Round robin fun stand up paddle board races will start on the harbour for prizes
So far it is looking pretty big and Goodtime is getting right behind it with prizes etc.
Just registered, can't wait for this one. With the right wind it will be so, so awesome. I have heard so many people talking about a marathon over the years and now it is all coming together in a big way.
Do I need a sail number to enter this, if so where do I get one ?
I am just a newish freerider so I guess it is alright to join in just for fun....
Clive,
You will need to take out full membership of a club. This will put you on the AWA register and get you a sail number. If you want join through bayside and we can organise that for you. That way you will be able to join in to the bayside racing. We have a large freeride fleet. Its a great way to improve your sailing and hang out with some very like minded souls.

I wont be able to make it this year but if it's on again next year and is a week apart from Burrum again, it'll be tempting for us that come from far and wide, I'll plan for it
If you want to try and emulate the legendary Ledge to Lancelin, post the race in the general section so the word is out
Good call firiebob, will do.
Re insurance and sail numbers I will have to get confirmation from RQ as the organisers but so far the word is you don't need insurance or a sail number.
This is of course a personal choice as you will have no recourse if you get hurt during the event given the waiver you need to sign when you join up.
As DAM71 has indicated there are clubs offering this type of insurance, they can be found on the WQ site www.qldwindsurfing.com
Will get back with the official word from RQ.
As per clause 16 of the NOR you must have public liability insurance. Bayside Sailboard club will be happy to do a pro rata membership for the remainder of this year for sailors wishing to join. This will give you the necessary insurance for this event, as well as the Burrum Speed event later this month. You will also be entitled to join in the Bayside Slalom series if you so wish.
Cost will be $40
Download the membership application at www.baysidesailboards.com.au/joinup.html
If you want sail numbers than let us know when you send your form through and we will pass on the required info.

RQ has updated the notice of race, changing the insurance clause to read "It is recommended that all participants hold third-party liability insurance."
Taking this on board it still stands that if you want to be covered in the event you should look at some insurance through one of the WQ affiliated clubs.
You should also note that if you don't have some easily recognisable form of identification on your sail (i.e. a sail number) it will be difficult for the organisers to rank you in the race.
The plan is to get as many people involved without too much fuss and a lot of these details may be determined by your own personal requirements but you need to be made aware of the options.
We may even be able to get the clubs there to offer insurance / memberships on the day. What do you think Bayside, Windwanderers and Goodtime/RQ?
Hey guys great to see that so many people are interested in the day, however We need to get everyone REGISTERED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so that Goodtime and Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron can work out how many prizes are needed and how much food is required to feed all of us,
so if you could register online asap this would greatly assist organisers, allowing them to keep the day which is filled full of family fun activities running as smooth as possible.
here is the online regerstration Linkhttp://www.rqys.com.au/index.php/around-green-island-marathon/
Luke will have to provide the finer detail but I think you have it pretty right evlPanda and as far as I was aware there was to be a staggered start for the kites and windsurfers so we won't get tangled in their lines.
Brad1, RQ has access to the beach at the back of the complex with plenty of parking and rigging space (and a bar). I'm bringing the family along as will many others, there is a nice cafe and facilities at the club as well as toilets etc on the point.
At this stage it even looks like there will be some wind!!!!
Important Message Regarding Insurance:
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I have just had a reminder from Tony Matta (WQ Treasurer) that in order for a competitor to be covered in an event it needs to be run by WQ or an Affiliated club and also has to be registered on the AWA calendar.
Unfortunately as the event is run by RQ your club membership insurances will not cover you for this race. This means it will be up to the individual if they want to compete without insurance.
I have a call in with RQ to get their take on the situation and will let you know if they can offer a temporary insurance for the event only.
Is anyone from the Gold Coast coming up for the Green Island event? Brad? Haircut? Should be a lot of fun.
Hey Scot,
I'll be there!
Brad
