Hi QLD'ers,

I'm heading to the Nara Seaworld resort (with family in tow) for 1 week of the Vic school Holidays.

I'm hoping to get some sailing in, but will be relying on hiring stuff from somewhere near the hotel, as I wont have gear or a car with me.

Is this do-able?
What's the general set up?

Is there a hire place nearby?

Any advice greatly appreciated?

(I've had a few sails down here lately and it will be nice to get out without freezing my clonkers off!!)

hi bondy

give surf FX a call on (07) 5531 3199 on Ferry RD. Southport. they will probably line u up with captin kirk who could possibly hire you gear for the day(s)

to the best of my knowledge there will be nothing to hire near the resort

might see you out there

I was just about to say what HC just said about Surf FX but your out of luck for wind for the next week looking at the forecast. There isn't really anywhere on the Gold Coast that works all that good in Westerlies. You could try the Spit which is literally like 300 metres from the back of SW Nara if your keen. I did try it once in a Westerly and it was OK but the places that the locals generally go to look like a no go for at least the next week. The place that works great in W winds is on Moreton Bay at Wellington Point but without a car you've got a problem getting there because it's about 1 HR drive North. Lets hope for your sake and ours that the forecast changes

We arrive on Tues evening and are there for 1 week. If the winds not predicted to be so good at least that makes me not feel so sad about not being able to bring gear with me.

Guess I'll do a bit of wait and see re the conditions, but it's nice to have a plan in mind if it looks like a good sailing day.

I've heard of Wello pt, but I've never looked it up before.

Thanks for the responses, but not looking too positive.

Bondi, if the wind comes up over your stay give Kirk a call, he can sort you out.

Hey Bondy
You should consider what many windsurf junkies do on the Gold Coast in the windless times. As the others have suggested Captain Kirk thru Surf FX may be able to set you up on a SUP. Little waves in the surf or even a flat water paddle on the Broadwater, Tallebudgera Creek or Currumbin is a way to get some saltwater and exercise in the sun.

If you have your family in tow you may be able to get a sail in, launching from Nara Resort.

Probably plenty gusty and unpredictable, but better than nothing. Plus you can launch from your backyard.

You'll need a Westerly.

Panda, are you saying that Nara resort have ws gear?
If so, should I bring a harness?

If not, is it worth getting stuff from Kirk at surf FX?

i think greenleader is saying that cap'nkirk will deliver the equipment to your door

as evilp says, on a westerly it is possible to launch from the resort.

westerlies at the goldcoast are very gusty, but sometimes u score a rare stable one

e.g. today is a 20knot westerly forecast for brissy area, so most will make the trek up to wellington point, rather than stay at the goldy. Wello westerlies are often as good as a goldcoast southerly for consistency, and 9/10 times worth the trip

well there you go - I didnt know that haircut! - I had assumed westerlies were crap everywhere & not bothered. ............. now what about the bad behaviour up there? I have heard quite a lot about it! & can I bring Lana?

After an intense bout of severe psychotherapy the Wello boys have been released back into the public. They are guaranteed not to harass beautiful international windsurfer chicks. In fact if they do they will feel intense nausea. I'm sure Lana will be safe. Just to be sure, tell her to bring a spare T-Shirt.

So the Wello boys are all drooges now, all proper? The devitchka Lana will fit right in then, hanging out at the Korova after a sesh. I still haven't viddied her.

No, you can't hire WS gear at Nara, if you could I'd imagine it would be complete ****e anyway. Sounds like the Captain can home deliver and go for a sail with you anyway, launching from Sea World. What could be better?

Thought: Anyone keen for a sail at Main Beach over summer, in a NE? rigging and launching area at Golden Sands is actually sublimely perfect. Not many carparks though. I'm missing cross-onshore stunt ramps.

needs to be really howling to fill in on the east side(seaworld Nara) to get a sail, anything less than 20/30knts just doesnt wraparound the building and hills, often 0 to 30knts in 2mins, will check it out about 11am then decide on wello or not. Dodgy now until Sept

Bondy - should be a nice afternoon at wello tomorrow.

Do you have a car? Can you get to wello?

Did you get gear from the captain?

Can you get you and your gear to coomera (foxwell rd, dreamworld area) by lunch time? I can take you up in my chariot from there if you'd like to come up for the arvo. Takes about 50 minutes to get to wello from there

I will be heading up that way in from the end of Sept to mid October. From memory afternoon SE breezes are common at that time of the year. Is that right? Is that good for the Broadwater?

the wind begins to improve and become more regular during september onward.

either direction is good

generally more NE direction than SE that time of year, but the weather pattern has been wacky the last couple of seasons, so one can only guess what it will be like during your stay

but hopefully good either way
