heard on the news that the northern tip of bribie has seen severe erosion and is looking like breaking through.
best news I've heard in 1 million years. bring it on!!!
it would return golden beach to being one of the all time classic spots in qld.
it used to be that way. in a SE you could sail from inside the passage straight out into the surf. it went from dead flat water to mast high waves depending how far out you went. even half way out you would hit clean 1-2 foot waves at full speed head on.
it was such a fantastic place before it silted up and the bar area halved in size.
the area breaking through is further south than the old spot. probably even better as it would reduce the wind shadow from the buildings.
Yes it was great back in the mid 80's but not sure it's a good thing for the environment on the passage side. But I guess nature will do what I wants to. Will also mean the bar will work better in a north east without the wind shadow from the hill.

so the water has already broken through..... and wow. to see the bunkers like that. we used to have parties there as teenagers and they were well back from the beach.
lots of potential for left and right barrels for the dedicated surfing population too
i'm thinking cross offshore SW wind hitting peeling waist high barrels. could be fun also.
Interesting the negative light that this is being painted in by the media, considering it seems to be part of a natural cycle?
Technically isn't that the creation of a new island?? someone's gonna have to name it. Before a politician names it after his missus or worse himself!
^^ exactly those poor pelicans where will they go , they must think we are idiots . I cant believe how exposed the bunkers are. Will have to go for a look .
The birds and ecosystem will just survive else where if needed. Funny they report on the effect nature is having on nature when we humans pose a much greater threat to the ecosystems in the passage.
As for the people living on Golden Beach worrying about their multi million dollar waterfront homes... poor you. Same as the people on the GC, if you want to build that close to water it comes with some element of risk. It is the owner that must bear the cost of that risk, if that is too much to stomach there are many other places in the world to build a home.
No matter what we do, what we build, nature will take it's course and we can't stop it.
Not sure if you could class the old weather board homes along Golden Beach multi million or in the same catergory as the GC homes.
I would think the engineers who built Pelican waters and the Greg N golf course will be doing a few calc for flooding , I think this is going to be the biggist concern. Come wet season add a high tide and a signifiantly greater bar mouth you might find hole suburbs under water with 90% of GB high and dry .
@ swoosh, I noticed the guys hat so he's probably got a vested interest.
@ aus31, agreed, it was like it once before. so it will be fine. even when it was open the waves didn't roll through all the way.
@ggh, flooding is usually caused from increased catchment upstream due to development. sea level is sea level so it doesn't really matter where the mouth of the river occurs.
I love it when they say Pumicestone Passage is under threat, as if is in a pristeen state now. Have you seen an recent aerial photo of the place. Forget what Caloundra South will do, the damage has already been done!!!!!!!!!!!!
The old guy that lives next door has been fishing the passage all his life, they used to walk to the end of the street and catch 300 whiting off the beach, now he spends all night out in a boat to catch 3. Degradation/depletion of the mangroves due to the development of Golden Beach and more so, Pelican Waters have already destroyed the passage. It astounded me that during the whole Caloundra South argument no one even questioned the approval of a major tidal development in Pelican Waters, not one word other than "they are for sale!"
Bring on the new mouth! Shame there isn't a series of big lows forming to really set it up for next windy season :)
US humans really are experts at crapping in our own nest. If I was mother nature I would occasionally kick our arse too!

I thought if you increased the size of the bar mouth or in this case has up to three zones break through, than you effectively increase the amount of water flowing into the passage during high tide. During flood conditions (at high tide )this increased water flow resists the run off water tyring to get out, causing flooding upstream in particluar canal estates . There would have been hydrolic reports done by the engineers who did the design for Pelican waters to determin this effect however those calculation may need to be reviewed if the orignal input data has changed .
Looks like you are on your way Richie, so why not start a new thread of your trip to keep us landlubbers informed.
